Naturally, students will engage in events/programs geared toward DEIB and cultural awareness, but in attending, students also can set boundaries from the physical, and sociocultural tensions of learning. In this facilitated session, participants will learn about a pilot program developed to address the gaps surrounding student cross-cultural learning experiences through student programming, while simultaneously broadening students’ cultural awareness and competence. Participants will brainstorm ways of re-imaging engagement utilizing experiential learning theory in their own existing and future programs.

In order to be productive in their learning, students need to feel like they belong. Faculty must be intentional in building a belonging classroom. Various teaching approaches can be implemented to promote a sense of belonging in both the synchronous and asynchronous classroom. This includes reinforcing the human element, incorporating active learning, and sending frequent notes of encouragement. To strengthen the community various platforms and technologies can be introduced to create a more flexible and simplified educational experience. This includes incorporating team-teaching modality and leveraging collaborative software applications. Such intentional approaches increase student engagement and their sense of belonging to a larger learning community.

Discovering Chicago ... From Home: Lessons Learned from Experiential Classes Taught Remotely

During the COVID-19 lockdown of Autumn 2020, remote teaching presented unique challenges for experiential classes such as the Discover Chicago and Explore Chicago classes required of all first-year students at DePaul University. After a breathless summer of online training, the more than 100 Discover and Explore Chicago faculty came up with innovative ways to approximate in-person excursions and community building. In this session we will explore those innovations and how they’re being used now that we’re back in the classroom … and the city.
