1. Generate problem statements that focus on the function to be achieved by any viable design solution

2. Apply a number of techniques and strategies such as the statement-restatement technique, the source/cause approach, the revision method, present state-desired state (PS-DS) strategy, and Duncker diagrams

3. Perform Kepner-Tregoe (KT) situation analysis to evaluate various aspects of a situation in terms of three criteria (timing, trend, and impact), thereby determining what is known, which tasks should be performed, and in what order these tasks should be completed

4. Perform KT problem analysis to determine possible causes of a problem

2.4 (Design assessment) Students will be able to critically evaluate the impact of cost, features, and performance on the useful functionality of a project "product" from the perspective of a non-technical customer and will understand the importance of critically challenging his/her design and use assumptions to ensure exploration of alternative designs & features from the perspective of a final customer product.

Problem Statements:

To create an online platform dedicated to artists that focuses on creating and sharing artwork and fostering communities dedicated to specific things, such as artwork of specific mediums or genres, fanart of specific characters and franchises, and any other special interests in artwork. Our platform would also include a tagging system that allows artists to tag their uploaded artwork with tags that describe their artwork they uploaded, such as what medium they used, what the subject(s) there are (franchise, characters, etc...). Users then can search using these tags to find specific artwork they're looking for and also find communities this way too.

• Initial Statement -  To create an online platform dedicated to artists that focuses on creating and sharing artwork and fostering communities dedicated to specific things, such as artwork of specific mediums or genres, fanart of specific characters and franchises, and any other special interests in artworks.

• Restatement - We aim to establish an online platform catering to artists, facilitating the creation, sharing, and community-building around various types of artwork. 

• Real Problem - How can we develop an online platform that effectively serves the diverse needs of artists by providing tools for creating, sharing, and engaging with artwork while also fostering communities centered around specific interests?

Revision Method:

• Initial Statement - To create an online platform dedicated to artists that focuses on creating and sharing artwork and fostering communities dedicated to specific things, such as artwork of specific mediums or genres, fanart of specific characters and franchises, and any other special interests in artworks.

• Revised statement - We seek to establish an online platform tailored to different communities of artists, emphasizing the creation, sharing, and community-building aspects of artwork.

Present State-Desired State Strategy:

• Present State - Currently, there is no dedicated website that effectively caters to artists' needs for creating, sharing, and engaging with artwork while also focusing on communities around their specific interests.

• Desired State - To create an online platform dedicated to artists that focuses on creating and sharing artwork and fostering communities dedicated to specific things, such as artwork of specific mediums or genres, fanart of specific characters and franchises, and any other special interests in artworks.

Underground mining is a dangerous job that requires miners to work deep underground with heavy machinery and explosives that can result in accidents and cave-ins that require swift and accurate response to ensure the safety and survival of any miners caught in an accident. Currently, many mines have inadequate systems for tracking the position of their miners and equipment which prolongs rescue times and decreases the chance of rescue for miners caught in an accident.

• Initial Statement - It's difficult to locate miners underground lost in an accident.

• Restatement - Tracking the position of miners underground is difficult, especially when an accident occurs.

• Real Problem - There currently isn't an easy and affordable way to track the location of miners underground that's robust enough to still work when an accident occurs.

Revision Method:

• Initial Statement - It's difficult to locate miners underground lost in an accident.

• Revised statement - The miners need an effective and cheap device that keeps track of its location at all times.

Present State-Desired State Strategy:

• Present State - Presently we don't have an easy and effective way to track the location of miners that are stuck underground.

• Desired State - We desire a small and lightweight device that can be kept on a minor to know their location in emergencies.
