Abstract

Contaxt is a system that provides real-time data and assessment of physical contact of athletes in a sporting game through the use of sensor technology integrated with the equipment and uniforms of athletes paired with an algorithm. This system will not only act as a method to measure the level of contact within a game, but also as a metric of performance among individual athletes.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Due to improved diet and training regimen, today’s athletes are too physically advanced for an official to rely solely on their eyes when assessing penalties. Officials have an inability to discern intent when assessing physical contact between players, resulting in major swings in game outcomes due to significant and incorrect penalty assessments.

Mission

Contaxt’s mission is to insert sensors into uniforms, equipment, and game balls in an effort to collect data that reads originator of contact, level of contact, time and location of contact, and more. Sensors will also communicate with each other via Bluetooth, from player to player, and player to ball, thus providing better depth of situational understanding. The value of this data is two-fold. First, it will be immediately fed to the official’s smart watch in an easy to read interface so an assessment can be made immediately, in real time, during game play rather than waiting until game stoppages to conduct a review. Second, there will be a wealth of data related to intelligent physical play vs reckless physical play that will assist teams in deciding on whether a player fits their defensive system as well as in assisting players in determining their value when negotiating their contract or selling themselves to a program.

Draft solution

Sensor Network (High Level)

  1. Physical contact above set threshold detected
  2. Sensors read contact parameters
  3. Data analyzed through Contaxt algorithm
  4. Referee's smart watch provides assessment data
  5. Contaxt reports created and saved for later review
