Project Background & Motivation

Listed below are some current teleprescence robots that are available for purchase. Generally, most of these systems can be categorized into either affordable, stationary designs or expensive, mobile designs. ARGOS's competitive advantage is to provide the same level of immersion and interactiveness that the high-end systems provide while having a significantly reduced cost. Additionally, all of these systems require the user to manually control the robot while ARGOS's use of eye-tracking will make the system more intuitive to remote users.

Kubi

"Kubi Classic for 7-10 inch tablets is the low cost, portable, and engaging telepresence solution that gives the remote user the ability to look around the room and be part of the conversation." - kubiconnect.com

The Kubi Classic is a tablet stand that can pan and tilt to allow a remote user to look around an area, as well as display their video feed at multiple angles. While it is relatively inexpensive at $600, it must be plugged in to operate, and it is noisy during operation. It has a 300° pan range and a 90° tilt range. It is very portable and weighs only 1.7 lbs.

Facebook Meta Portal

The Portal is stationary and instead relies on a wide-angle camera to capture an entire room. It is very inexpensive at $50, but lacks any immersion given its small screen and fixed angle.

GoBe Robots is a simple telepresence robot that allows a user to navigate around an environment. It has a large 21.5" touchscreen display, a LIDAR system and 3D cameras, as well as multiple HD video cameras. It is equipped with echo-cancelling microphones and has a battery life of 8 hours.

Double Robotics

Double 3 is a fully mobile telepresence robot that provides an immersive experience to both local and remote users. It has a battery life of 4 hours, has two 13MP cameras, and has a point-and-click navigation capability. It costs $4499 so it is very expensive though very functional.
