Project Helene (www.ProjectHelene.org) is a division of the STEM Amateur Radio Club in SC (www.stemarc.org). We were quite heavily involved with all communications for the Hurricane Helene affected areas of Western NC, TN, SC, GA from day #1 of this disaster. We continue in our efforts by delivering supplies when possible. Our primary focus now is to build strength within communities and families as it relates to emergency radio communication. Because: When ALL else fails, ham radio works.
When Saturday August 16th 11am to 3:00pm or later
Where: Buladean Community Resource Center, 12190 NC - 226, Bakersville, NC
Who: Anyone and everyone desiring to learn back-up radio communication
Cost: Free Donations will be accepted to support future such workshops.
What you’ll learn: Introduction to various forms of radios. How to set up and use your radio. The importance of radio operations during disasters and emergencies. How to support emergency response organizations, including police, medical and fire dept personnel.
You’ll walk away with a free hand-held radio, programmed with all the local channels including GMRS and amateur (ham) radio frequencies. If needed Project Helene will cover the $35 FCC license fee (no exam is required). If you want to go further towards securing a ham license, we can provide guidance there.
Also, if you already have a simple hand-held radio and unsure of how to use it or need help setting it up… bring it and come join. If you have children, please bring them as well.
Note: These pictures and videos are of the event in Hickory on Tuesday Feb 25th.
