Summer Activities and Learning

Here are some suggestions:

• My Google Site will be available all summer. You can do some of the STEM activities or ideas for E-learning days. You can listen to Story Time with Ms. Wardell, which has Ms. Wardell’s Favorite First Grade Read-Alouds. You can read and do a craft with Mrs. Mariotti. I have created a page for all of her stories and activities.

• Read 20 minutes every day! ​Your child can read to himself/herself, or you can read to your child. Ask questions when reading; What is happening now? What is the character thinking? Where does this story take place? If you were the character, what would you do?
• Attend Virtual Mass together via Facebook, or television. Pray together. Read the remaining pages in the children’s Religion book.
• Talk Math whenever you can.​ How many utensils are on the table? If we put four ice cubes in each glass, how many ice cubes do we need? How many in a dozen? Estimate how many raisins are in a box, and then count them. Estimate how many grapes are on the vine, and then count them. Count by twos, threes, five, and tens to one hundred. Grow vegetables or flowers together. Measure their growth. Have your child make up word problems for you to solve.
  • Play card and board games. The children love this and learn so much!
  • Put puzzles together and build with blocks and Legos.
• Have your child write letters to family members, keep a journal, or write their own stories. Make up stories together.
• Watch the sunrise or sunset. If you get away from the city lights, look for stars and meteors. Talk about the weather. Look for dew on the grass, and discuss how the grass becomes dry. Look up the names of the trees, plants and flowers in your neighborhood. Become a bird watcher. Identify the types of birds you see.
• Talk about your traditions for The Fourth of July, and summer events. Talk about how sometimes there is a need for change.
