St Athan Primary?
Children’s Rights
At St Athan Primary we are working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School. This means we ensure that the UN Conventions on Children’s Rights is part of our planning, policies, practices and school ethos. This ensures that the value of children and their opinions is high on our agenda. The idea is that the whole school learns about the rights of the child, and embeds these values within leadership and management.
Learning and Teaching
Learners play a vital role in our planning for learning. All children are consulted with on topics, contents, contexts and knowledge before full planning is completed.
Pupils questions are often displayed within the classroom for children to refer to during their studies and discuss if and when they are answered.
School Improvement priorities, where appropriate, are shared with learners and views collated to further inform future planning and evaluate impact and success.
Decision-Making
We run a variety of committees for learners to become involved in different areas of our school life e.g. ECO Committee, School Council,
Regularly throughout the year pupils are invited to have Tea & Toast with Mrs Haynes. Learners discuss the school curriculum, environment or resources with the Head teacher and plan for change.
Our Year 6 pupils take part in the Childrens’ Ambassador Mission and lead it with KS2 pupils
Military Learner Voice
St Athan Primary School run Military Child workshops for learners to share experiences, reflect on school current processes and create new ideas to further support children and families linked to the armed forces
We have an area on our website dedicated to military families and support our learners when family members are deployed
Policies and procedures reflect the thoughts and opinions of our military children
Curriculum 4 Wales
Learners have enjoyed assemblies, workshops and whole school events regarding the Curriculum for Wales, the Four purposes, introduction of Areas of Learnings etc. and their understanding has been key to our school journey.
Learner voice has been pivotal in the curriculum design and authentic learning experiences organised by the school.
Learners are asked for feedback on a regular basis.
At the end of each topic learners celebrate what they have learned through a sharing event with other pupils across the school.
Research shows that pupils learn more when they are engaged with their learning in a meaningful way and feel consulted about their thoughts and ideas. At St Athan Primary School we value and prioritise what our pupils think and actively include them in our decision-making processes, give opportunities for collaboration, encourage them to communicate effectively, discuss real life matters and problem solve together.
We have an aim to develop our pupils into - Ambitious capable learners, enterprising creative contributors, ethical informed citizens, healthy confident individuals
