Draft Nursing Home Comprehensive (NC) Item Set Now Available

The draft Minimum Data Set (MDS) Nursing Home Comprehensive (NC) Item set version 1.18.11 is now available. CMS plans to release the final version of the MDS Item Sets later in 2022, which will be effective beginning October 1, 2023.

Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual

Below is a list of some of the major revisions:

• Section G has been eliminated with two former section G items, Functional Limitation in Range of Motion and Mobility devices, being retained in section GG.

• All MDS items that accommodate the Transfer of Health Information QRP quality measures (QMs) have been added.

• All MDS items that accommodate the additional Standardized Patient Assessment Data Elements have been added.

• The PHQ-9 has been changed to the PHQ-2 to 9 which contains skip patterns that shorten this interview to 2 questions in certain circumstances.

• Section N0410 has been eliminated and replaced with section N0415-High Risk Drug Classes: Use and indication. This revision expands the medication list to include antiplatelets and Hypoglycemics and adds an indication column.

Note: Only the Comprehensive assessment item set has been released and the MDS 3.0 website indicates that this is still a draft. Although it is still very early, it may be worth your while to download the new version to familiarize yourself with the changes.
