The importance of hand hygiene has been recognized as early as the mid-1800s when researchers tested their hypotheses that contaminated healthcare workers’ hands were causing infections. Traditionally, hand hygiene efforts have been geared toward healthcare workers’ hands; however, initiatives are starting to include patients.
The purpose of this toolkit is to create resources for healthcare providers to aid in improving patient hand hygiene in different settings. The toolkit includes extensive guidelines, barriers, interventions, and tools for improving patient hand hygiene in different healthcare settings. A valuable respource to refer to now ands in the future.
In 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), updated the life safety and emergency preparedness regulations related to healthcare facilities to improve protections for all individuals enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid, including those residing in long-term care facilities (nursing homes) were updated. The updates expanded requirements related to sprinkler systems, smoke detector coverage, and emergency preparedness plans. Additionally, facilities were required to implement an infection control program.
