Not able to swim with the group due to work/family/time pressures? We get it! So we offer members the opportunity to purchase a 9 month subscription (October - June) of weekly workouts. Workouts will be uploaded weekly, starting October 1 and available to subscribing members on our private STARRT Swimming Facebook page.
We offer coached swim workouts three days a week. Our swim coordinators help to organize swimmers into lanes based on 100 metre swim times and skill level. The coach then provides workouts for various skill levels and feedback for improvement to reach your swimming goals.

AM Coach: Jason Britton
PM Coach: Erica Prins
Stand-by Coach: Marc Hurley
Jason heads up the STARRT swim program and is our morning coach. He has more than 20 years experience as an NCCP swim and triathlon coach, coaching athletes from 4-84 years of age at abilities ranging from beginner to elite. Between 2008-2014 Jason was Canada’s Age Group Triathlon World Championship Team Coach. He has a Bachelors in Physical Education with a focus in Sport Performance and is also an NCCP coaching course facilitator and coach evaluator. Jason has coached the STARRT swim program and annual run clinic since 2018.
Jason doesn’t just instruct others on what to do...he does it himself. He competed in his first triathlon in 1994, at the St. Albert Kids of Steel. Since that time he has completed more than 300 triathlons worldwide, including 40 World Championship races as a U23, Elite, and Age Group athlete at all distances from sprint to Ironman. In 2011 he was Canada’s standard distance age group triathlete of the year.
My name is Erica Prins and I am excited about the opportunity to coach the evening swim program for STARRT. I have a lot of swimming and triathlon experience, having trained with the Edmonton Triathlon Academy (ETA) from 2011-2016, during which time I competed in many junior elite and age group races. Today I continue to train recreationally for swimming, biking, and running.
I have my NCCP level 1 in triathlon, and experience coaching with the ETA, with the City of Edmonton where I worked as a swimming instructor and lifeguard for 8 years, and with the UofA Golden Bears triathlon program for junior high students.
My main focus has always been the swim portion of triathlon - not only is it my personal favourite part of a triathlon, but it is also the area that I love to teach and coach the most.
I am currently a PhD student at the University of Alberta, pursuing a degree in soil science. Prior to this I studied and worked abroad in 6 different countries doing a M.Sc. in Viticulture and Enology (the study of grape growing and winemaking) and had some really incredible opportunities to travel, work, and meet people from around the world. During this time I also got into open water swimming and did several longer distance open water swim races in Australia and Croatia. After 6 years abroad I decided to return home to Edmonton to pursue further education and to focus on soil health in more local agricultural crops.
I have experience coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities, and I look forward to helping all of the swimmers in this group improve their swimming and reach their own personal goals.
We have been privileged to have Marc coach the STARRT swim program since 2017. In 2023, he stepped back from regular coaching duties, but he continues to lend his expertise to our swimmers on an as-needed basis.
Marc's first few years with STARRT involved working with the evening group, and then he took on responsibility for the morning swim program. His swimmers would agree that Marc's easy manner, technical swimming knowledge, and encouraging coaching style made turning up at the pool three times a week - in the depths of winter or at the crack of dawn - worth it!
Marc is a supportive and inspirational coach and STARRT is proud to have him on board.
