STANYS NYC is your local section. When you become a member of the state organization, you immediately become a member of your local section. The local level provides you with resources, professional development, and more all in the city. In New York City, our current goal is to provide you with a comprehensive website that pulls together key resources and trainings already being provided in the city.

New York City is the biggest school district in the country and we want to hear from you, our teachers and leaders. Let us know how we can help as we continue to build our future goals.

With over twenty one years of experience as a science educator and school leader in the New York City public high schools, Heather Page is the principal of the Baccalaureate School for Global Education, a 7-12 world IB school in Astoria, Queens. Heather earned her PhD in science education from New York University, her research centered on developing new curricula resources to encourage girls in science. KAITLYN REILLEY

Vice Chairperson and Special Education/ELL DOC*

Kaitlyn Reilley is an Academic Response Team Specialist at the Bronx Borough Office. She previously taught science in the South Bronx for eight years. Her favorite subject to teach is living environment. She is a Math for America Master Teacher. She enjoys traveling, attending Broadway shows, and trying out new recipes!

MARY GIUDICE

Treasurer and Intermediate DAL*

My name is Mary Giudice. I am an eighth-grade science teacher at IS 125 in Woodside, Queens, teaching there since 2005. I have taught grades six and seven in the past. I also teach Living Environment. In another lifetime, I taught Regents and AP Chemistry. I am a member of the NYC DOE’s Middle School Science Leadership Team since its inception. As a team member, I created a new Scope and Sequence, evaluated curricula, and provided professional learning opportunities for teachers. I am the STANYS representative to the Science Council of New York City (SCONYC), where I am a past president (2014-2018). I continue to serve on the Board of Directors and as the Registration Chair for their virtual conference series. For STANYS, I am the NYC Section Treasurer. I’m in my second term as the Director-at-Large—Intermediate, a position I’ve held since July 2017. Before that, I was the Subject Area Representative-Intermediate for NYC. I also served as Chair of the NYC section from 2014-2017. I am a mother to three elementary-aged children, Anthony, Maria, and Joseph (the latter two who are twins) and several cats, dogs, and birds (don’t ask). I look forward to serving the teachers of science in New York City for many years to come.

EMILY HART

Secretary and Chemistry SAR*

Emily Hart is an enthusiastic chemistry teacher at Harrison High School. She teaches an honors level chemistry course called Foundations in College Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology. In addition to teaching, Emily is the senior class co-advisor. She loves her involvement in STANYS where she has the opportunity to represent NYC teachers and also meet and collaborate with incredible educators from across the state. In her free time, Emily enjoys experimenting with new recipes and exploring hiking destinations in the Hudson Valley.

JOAN GILLMAN

Elementary SAR

Joan Gillman is now in her 40th year of being an enthusiastic teacher and educator. She has had several articles published including "Constellations are Out of This World- A Historical and Present Day Look at Constellations and the Stories Behind Them" for STANYS's Science Teachers Bulletin in the Fall of 2011 and "Straw Rockets are Out of This World" for NSTA's Science and Children in October 2013. Recently, STANYS published her article "Buildings, Bridges, and Structures Oh My" in the spring edition for The Science Bulletin. Joan has frequently given workshops at conferences for NSTA, NSTA STEM, STANYS and SCONYC. Recently, Joan was awarded the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievement Award for 2020-2021. Joan teaches science for grades 4, 5, and 6 at The Browning School, an all- boys school in Manhattan. Joan has been the recipient of several awards including the Urhy Thompson- Teacher of the Year prize in 2017 at her previous school. Joan was a MAVEN (Mars Atmospheric Volatile Evolution Mission) Educator Ambassador for NASA in 2015, and she was one of twelve teachers selected for the GLOBE Weather and Climate Field Test Program in Boulder, Colorado in 2017. Joan is excited to continue in her role as the Elementary SAR for New York City.

JOHN CUNNINGHAM

Retirees DOC

Retired Biology/ Environmental/ Forensics teacher of 29 years. Taught at John Hay HS and Brooklyn Tech. Past President of NYBTA and President of SCONYC. Member of NYS Science Education Consortium Funding Work Group. Primary pursuits include: Science education advocacy, Miocene paleobotony, Levantine Crusader State castle ownership and family histories, and blues guitar.

SETH GUINALS-KUPPERMAN

Physics DAL

Seth Guiñals-Kupperman has taught physics since 2003 exclusively in the NYC public school system. He has facilitated dozens of workshops on the state, national and international level. Seth has been a STANYS member for over 10 years and has earned the Math for America Master Teacher Fellowship, National Board Certification, as well as Fellowships and appointments through the Fulbright Foundation and the American Association of Physics Teachers. Seth loves teaching, travel, cooking, nature, and of course, his students.

ROBIN GLASSBERG

Applied Sciences SAR

Robin Glassberg has been in education for over a decade. She has worked throughout the United States and Internationally as a Teacher and Leader. Glassberg is an Adjunct Professor in the education department at The City College of New York and St. John’s University. She specializes in technology, computer science, math, Students With Disabilities (SWD), and English Language Learners (ELL) teacher training programs. Her background is in STEM, and she has taught computer classes, Lego Robotics, computer science, website building, and necessary soft computer skills. Robin is also a consultant researcher for NYU Steinhardt at the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools, where she provides research on STEM that highlights teaching through a social justice lens.
Robin received her undergraduate degree from the University at Albany, a master’s in science education at Hunter College, and a master’s in education leadership from Bank Street College. In the fall of 2022, she will be attending New York University, Steinhardt as a Fellow Doctoral student in the Teaching and Learning department focusing on STEM and Equity.

JOHN SALAZAR

Earth Science SAR

John Salazar is responsible for supporting science teachers within the New Visions Charter High Schools and the NYC Department of Education Affinity network through professional development, coaching and curriculum development. His main areas of support are Earth and Space Science and Chemistry. Before coming to New Visions, he worked as a NYC Department of Education science instructional coach, collaborating with a team that designed citywide professional development in the areas of science, social studies and ELA. John previously taught general and advanced placement high school Chemistry. He holds an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the University of San Diego and an MPA in public and nonprofit management from New York University.

ANDREW HOLZ

Intermediate SAR

Andrew Holz has taught General Science and Earth Science Regents at the Queens Valley School of the Arts since 2004. He is a Master Teacher with the Math for America Fellowship program, an Urban Advantage continuing teacher, and has worked with the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) on several projects developing online curricula for the Playground Physics app (Noticing Tools Suite) and The Pack online game. His love of traveling and exploring has allowed him to bring many of these experiences to his classroom.

ELISSA LEVY

Physics SAR

Elissa Levy teaches physics (all levels) at a public school in New York City. She has taught AP Psychology and Intro to Computer Science as well. She is a workshop leader and board member at STEMteachersNYC, a fellow and workshop leader at Math for America, a curriculum designer and instructional coach at Upperline Code, and an editor at the Underrepresentation Curriculum. She is involved in various initiatives to create more equitable physics classrooms and to increase student access to (and excitement about) coding. ANNA SKORUPA

Colleges SAR

Anna Skorupa is a doctoral student in Teaching & Learning at New York University with a focus in science education, and an adjunct instructor in NYU’s Science Education department. She has over fifteen years of experience working in education, and has worked as a middle school integrated science teacher and high school physical science and chemistry teacher, as well as instructional specialist and professional development leader for school districts and education non-profits. Currently, she teaches undergraduate courses that focus on the intersection of professional science knowledge and practice with issues of broader socio-political significance and that explore the ways that many of the questions that we seek to answer through science are inextricably linked to questions of power, value, and meaning. Her research interests include science teacher education, teaching the nature of science and science as a way of knowing, and culturally relevant/sustaining and critical approaches to science teaching and science teacher education.
