Join STANYS NYC section leadership on Tuesday 1/24/23 from 7:30pm to 8:30pm for a virtual event including professional learning and networking with your fellow science educators. We will engage in a short session with Kiera Nieuwejaar and Meghan Eison from The League of Young Inventors, a Brooklyn-based 501(c)3 nonprofit and provider of innovative elementary school engineering design curriculum co-developed with public and charter educators across New York City. Over the last two years, the League has been piloting a series of toy engineering units to help expand access to, participation in, the creative process for New York’s youngest learners. Join us for this workshop to learn about their dynamic approach to teaching the engineering design process to NYC elementary students. As part of this workshop, you’ll get to sample one of their hands-on activities to turn a quarter into a spinning top that can spin for as long as 20 seconds. Afterwards, there is time to ask questions, connect, network, and share resources with Kiera Nieuwejaar and Meghan Eison and other NYC science educators hosted by Andrew Holz. This event is FREE and open to all members. Please note this event is limited to 100 participants, please register early! Please invite your colleagues and other science education friends who are not yet members of STANYS (they can join STANYS here).

During our March virtual event we spent time with Dr. Jonnathan Medina Ramos from Flinn Scientific as he talked about the research benefits of active learning and how Flinn Scientific can help teachers develop active learning lessons. We engaged in a session entitled "Digital and Hands-On Solutions to Engage your Students in Science" with Dr. Medina Ramos, who also walked us through various tools and resources available to science teachers of all subject areas. Flinn Scientific has solutions for chemistry, biology, physics, earth science, and environmental science learning for all classrooms including Advanced Placement courses. Participants received trial access to PAVO which includes online curriculum resources. Dr. Medina Ramos will return in May to talk to us specifically about supports for AP science classes.
This virtual event was hosted by Heather Page and Emily Hart, the session materials and session recording can be found in this folder: https://tinyurl.com/3mwwxkm3
We spent the hour learning about the wonderful teacher resources and programs at NYSCI on Tuesday 2/8/22 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
Michaela Labriole from the New York Hall of Science led us through an interactive exploration of their educational programs, especially Playground Physics, The Pack, Transmissions: Gone Wild! and the science learning series. Secondary SAR Andrew Holz was available to share his own experiences from his collaboration with NYSCI. Afterwards, we engaged in a question and answer session with Michaela.
This virtual event was hosted by Heather Page and Andrew Holz, the session materials and session recording can be found in this folder: https://tinyurl.com/49vcn238.
During our January virtual event we met with Lissa Johnson from Mosa Mack Science, and learned more about their NGSS-aligned mysteries, labs, and engineering challenges for 4th to 8th graders. Lissa walked us through the various resources, focused on phenomena and including labs and engineering challenges for various science topics. Participants received a free 60 day trial to all of Mosa Mack’s resources.
Materials from our 1/11/22 session, including the presentation and the session recording, can be found in this folder.
During our December virtual event, we explored educator resources and school programs, including virtual class lessons, from NYC H2O. The session was facilitated by Stalin Espinal, David Chuchuca, and Kevin Barrett from NYC H2O, a local organization focused on inspiring and educating New Yorkers of all ages to learn about, enjoy, and protect the city's local water ecology. We learned about some fun and easy ways to get our students engaging in science outdoors, and spent some time honing our own observation skills through some sketching. Check out resources focused on water ecology education from NYC H2O in their hub, including how to schedule a virtual lesson. Check their website for volunteer opportunities as well for your and your students, including clean-ups of our local waters.
Materials from our 12/21/21 session, including the presentation and the session recording, can be found in this folder.
During our November virtual event on Tuesday 11/23/21, we learned about the work at the Wild Bird Fund here in New York City with Michelle Ashkin and Camille Licate, education co-directors. The Wild Bird Fund is New York City's only wildlife rehabilitation center, caring for orphaned, injured, and ill animals 7 days a week. We explored their K-12 education programs and learned more about classroom visits, in-clinic visits, bird walks, biodiversity walks, and yearlong teacher programs. Education programs can be tailored to focus on topics such as evolution, adaptation, climate change, biodiversity, life cycles, and more.
The session materials, including the presentation and recording, can be found in this folder.
STANYS NYC section leadership offered a virtual event including professional learning and networking with your fellow science educators on Wednesday 10/27/21.
We engaged in a short session centered on “Environmental Teach-Ins” with John Bachmann and Fred Rubel from the EPA Alumni Association. “Environmental Teach-Ins” presentations are offered remotely in New York statewide during the 2021-2022 school year; these free presentations for high school teachers and students focus on topics such as air pollution, water pollution, climate change, and environmental justice. We learned more about how to coordinate a virtual visit with these former EPA experts.
The session materials, including the presentation, program flyer and recording can be found in this folder.
STANYS NYC section leadership again offered a free virtual event on Tuesday 2/23/21 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. We engaged in a short session centered on Engineering with Paper with Godwyn Morris of Dazzling Discoveries, this session offered hands-on strategies for using just paper, tape and scissors to create projects aligned with the NGSS science and engineering practices. We really enjoyed creating paper mazes! Afterwards, participants joined breakout rooms to connect, network and share resources with other NYC science educators hosted by Heather Page and Rishi Krishnamoorthy. Session recordings and presentation can be found in this folder.
STANYS NYC section leadership offered a free virtual event in collaboration on Tuesday 1-19-21. Educators engaged in a short session focused on density learning activities students can do at home with Joan Gillman, science teacher at the Browning School and STANYS Elementary School SAR. This elementary level focused session offered hands-on strategies for exploring density with household materials and included specific suggestions for modifications for the secondary level, including a share-out from participants during our networking session. This session was also hosted by Heather Page and Kaitlyn Reilley. Session recordings and presentation can be found in this folder.
