Overview of STANYS-CWS
The Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), founded in 1896, is an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in science education. Central Western is one of the seventeen STANYS Sections and encompasses the counties of Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates. Our purpose is to promote science education and provide programs benefiting students and teachers in this region.
Are You a Member of STANYS-CWS?
If you live or teach in Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties, you will be interested in joining the Central Western Section of STANYS and participating in the educational activities we offer. Activities sponsored or endorsed by CWS are listed on the calendar page of this Web site. We are particularly proud of our annual science enrichment events for students. Science Congress is one of the few NYS regional science fairs affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. For teachers, we provide an opportunity for professional development and networking at various events.
CWS activities are open to all science teachers and their students in the six-county area, regardless of their membership status. Nonetheless, your membership is important to the viability of the section and the continuation of section events. The rebate our section receives from the state is based on membership and membership determines our representation on the STANYS Board of Directors.
By joining STANYS, you become a part of the primary organization that represents your profession at both the state and local levels. Full membership in STANYS costs $49 per year ($92 for two years) and retired teacher dues are $25/$46. STANYS also offers a group membership for five or more teachers from one district, at a discount of 20%. In addition, STANYS and NSTA can offer you a joint membership. If you are a pre-service student you may obtain free membership with a letter from your supervisor. The benefits of joining and the details regarding membership may be found on the STANYS membership web page.
If you are new to the profession or have allowed your membership to lapse in recent years, please join now! You may join during any month. For more information contact Membership Chair: cwmembership@stanys.org.
