Intermediate readers, typically 3rd-5th graders, have a solid grasp of early literacy skills. They know the names and sounds of individual letters and most long vowel patterns, and can read most sight words automatically. These readers may have difficulty with longer, multi-syllabic words, less common sight words, and may have a challenge understanding more complex text.
Reading with your child at this age, especially if they are a struggling reader, is just as important as reading to younger children. Find a book that interests them to read and enjoy together - maybe it is a funny chapter book such as Clementine by Sarah Pennypacker or a fun mystery compilation such as Sleuth & Solve: 20+ Mind-Twisting Mysteries by Victor Escandell for your young detective. There are many lists of great books to read at any age to help get your reading adventure off to a great start!
