First off, here is The Archer Eye's founding mother and editor, Olivia Goodman. Her interests include politics, coffee shops, exploring cities and reading. Personally, she looks up to those in the journalism industry who have shown her that, with hard work and resilience, anything is possible. Laura Kuenssberg, Pippa Crerar, Emily Maitlis, Ione Wells, Beth Rigby and others, have been a considerable source of inspiration to Olivia as she hopes to one day progress down the same career path. On the weekend, Olivia loves running, diving into an independent coffee shop and catching up with the news. To relax, Olivia feels most at peace in the city, endlessly walking and exploring, from the bright lights in New York City, to London under a blue summer's sky. Olivia created The Archer Eye because she wanted to allow others to be able to express their talents, share their ideas and have a platform where they felt excited to share their own work.
Olivia wanted to thank her team for their dedication and hard work. She said that 'I am looking forward to working closely with the skilled and enthusiastic team of reporters, as well as talking to those within Stanwell to find out your stories.'
The thoughtful and enthusiastic reporter Alice adores meeting new people and exploring new places, from the hustle and bustle of London to the serene waters of Bali. Particularly, the calmness of the beach is where Alice most likes to be. Her ideal day out would be any rural seaside retreat. Individuals who inspire Alice include empowering female artists, such as Alessia Cara, Rihanna, Ciara and even the resilient surfer, Bethany Hamilton. To relax, Alice enjoys listening to music from a range of genres, as well as winding down with a workout in the gym. Alice joined the newspaper to ensure that students know about the facilities in Stanwell, so they know what is available to them whilst they study here and, as she tells me, ‘to support her fellow writers’.
Our wonderful reporter Eleeza is the biggest fan of chocolate orange, so you know what to get her for her birthday now. To her, relaxation means sitting down with her family and watching all things football, whether it be her all-time favourite team Liverpool FC, or the Lionesses who inspire her, as well as Greta Thunberg, her mum and her dad. In the football community, Eleeza is passionate about improving the quality of representation and participation for women and girls with a BAME background, and this is something she wishes to help with in the future. Winning the Young Volunteer of the Year 2022, Eleeza’s dedication is seen, heard and admired within the community. The reason why the newspaper is important to her is because she wants to get involved with the school community and to learn new skills which will assist her in the future.
A good taste in music and movies would be an understatement to describe Catrin. The witty and wonderful reporter spends her time listening to music with her family and friends because, at a young age, Catrin’s Grandad had played a huge role in helping her to discover individuals such as Doris Day. To Catrin, having fun includes attending concerts when she can and her favourite singers include Taylor Momsen and Corey Taylor. Dedication and resilience is something Catrin embodies, as three times a week she participates in historical martial arts which she says is ‘so much fun’. Her interests include criminology and archaeology, and this is something Catrin possibly hopes to explore more in the future. In the holidays, Catrin and her family swap the lively city for the tranquil setting of West Wales, enjoying kayaking, the sea and other activities such as surfing.
When getting to know Eve, she best described herself as ‘a bit like a grandma in a young person’s body’. I smiled and felt at ease. The welcoming and kind reporter Eve treasures spending time with her family and friends, and these individuals inspire Eve the most. Especially her cousin Clare, who is a teacher and has always been someone who Eve looks up to. To relax, Eve adores reading. Her favourite book is ‘The White Umbrella’, because it's the book her dad read to her when she was little. Recently, her new hobby is knitting and now I see why she told me about the grandma comparison. Yet, the reason why she joined the newspaper is because ‘it looks fun’ and she says ‘putting myself in a new situation is something I am trying to do more’.
Qualifying for the Wales Academy Under 21's Netball team, Nia is passionate about sport and loves playing Netball and Basketball. Nia’s dedication and hard work has meant that she has competed in some of the most renowned sporting competitions across the country and continues to represent Wales with diligence. On the weekend, Nia adores watching sport inside or outdoors; it's her way to relax, unwind and spend time with her family and friends. The individual who inspires Nia the most is Gretel Beuta, ‘her ultimate hero whose dedication and determination is totally admirable’. She expresses that being a part of the newspaper means that she is able to ensure that talents are being highlighted within the school and that individual accomplishments deserve celebration.
Another one of our lovely reporters is Beth. In her spare time, Beth loves reading books and watching movies. In particular, her most loved books include the Hobbit series and, on weekends, she dives into the romance genre, watching movies such as ‘Me Before You’. When it comes to passions and interests, Beth adores creative activities, whether it be from fashion to music and arts & crafts. Beth unwinds by painting, sewing, and creating sculpture work for her friends and family. To relax and to take a break from school, the music artist of her choice would be ‘The Oh Hellos’ and the people who inspire Beth are those she holds close to her. When joining the newspaper, Beth shared that The Archer Eye might help her to see which path she may want to take in the future.
The wonderment and awe of experiencing new places is what our amazing reporter Izzy loves the most. She loves travelling around the world and having the opportunity to learn about all kinds of different cultures, trying new foods and spending quality time with her family. Her favourite holidays include the sunny Amalfi Coast and other picturesque places such as Split in Croatia and Olhão in Portugal. Creativity is at the heart of what Izzy enjoys. On the weekends, Izzy loves practising her guitar and capturing moments on her camera. She also admires how people express themselves in art and how writers are able to create other worlds in literature. For Izzy, she hopes that The Archer Eye will show an insight into aspects of Stanwell which people may not know about. Also, she values laughing with her friends and being by the ocean when she can, because of the joy it brings her.
Meet our caring reporter Amara, who is enthusiastic about football, politics and history, which is what her family loves to do on the weekend. Amara and her family are season ticket holders for Cardiff City FC, so the stadium is where Amara most loves to be. Relaxation to Amara means playing football, spending time with her family and friends, watching the much-loved television series ‘The Office’ and listening to music. Particularly, Amara adores the musician Loyle Carner and, at the moment, she is reading 'The Thief'. The people who inspire Amara are her parents and Betty Campbell. Admirably, Amara is a part of the Wales FA Youth Council, as well as the Children and Young People’s Advisory Board. In the future, Amara aspires to work in Civil Rights Law, as she expressed that she wishes to ‘strive for better equality in all walks of life’. Amara is also passionate about learning French and travelling, in order to gain a greater experience of the world. The reason why Amara wanted to join The Archer Eye was because she wanted to be involved in a student-led extracurricular activity.
The fabulous reporter Liv Lyons is passionate about history, politics, and travelling to admirable places such as Sicily, Kraków, Edinburgh and Connemara. Her favourite books include 'Where the Crawdads Sing', 'The Diary of a Young Girl' by Anne Frank and 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop. To unwind, on the weekends Liv loves rowing and spending time with family and friends by going out for food. When away from school, Liv enjoys watching films, shopping and catching up with global affairs. Learning new things is what Liv finds most interesting and, in the future, she hopes to make a positive change in some way, helping people to improve their lives as best as she can. Her inspirations include her mum, Michelle Obama, Laura Kuenssberg, David Olusoga and Emmeline Pankhurst. The reason why Liv wanted to join the school newspaper was to gain experience regarding journalism and to contribute to the school, as well as learning to develop her writing skills.
The dedicated reporter Angharad is passionate about biology, it’s her favourite subject and she says “it's the best science”. When speaking to Angharad, it made me smile and laugh when she described that one of the interesting facts about herself is that she had ‘successfully been rejected from all McDonald's, Burger King and KFC.’ ( all fellow teenagers secretly share that same fact). Angharad also loves to play video games in her spare time, her go-to is Elder Scrolls Lore which is a particular set of video games. When away from school, Angharad’s hobbies include reading and playing the violin. One of her favourite books is Under the Same Sky by Joseph Kim and she is also passionate about East Asian History. Angharad says that her favourite films are ‘either Rush Hour 1 and 2 or Lord of the Rings Two Towers’. Another interesting fact about Angharad is that she has a ‘1037 day Duolingo streak in Mandarin’, and that she can ‘mix a tango and a Pepsi so that they don't mix and so the tango lies above the Pepsi.’ Lastly, Angahrad is hoping to pursue a degree in medicine and wishes to attend Oxford to do so.
Last but not least, is our eager reporter Abdullah, who recently joined The Archer Eye team. When getting to know Abdullah, he said that his interests include going to the gym, watching football, listening to music and reading. He relishes whodunit novels, with the renowned Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express being his favourite novel. Abdullah's favourite football team is Arsenal and on the weekend, he likes to unwind by playing games on his Xbox. His idols are simply not just a name to a face, he said that 'I am inspired by many successful people, but I am also inspired by some people's failures and not to repeat them.' He also loves Chemistry even though, he says, it's the hardest one out of the three A-Levels he has chosen.
