Placement in Math 8 is based on a combination of the following information: NWEA Assessment, teacher recommendation, and/or past academic achievement in mathematics. Students in this course will work to achieve mastery of all 8th Grade TEKS aligned with the Archdiocesan Standards.
As outlined in the State Standards, the focus for 8th Grade will be on three critical areas (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take Algebra I as 9th graders.
