Placement into Honors Math 6-7 is based on a combination of the following information: NWEA Assessment, teacher recommendation, and/or past academic achievement in mathematics. Students in this course will work to achieve mastery of all Grade 6 and selected 7th Grade TEKS aligned with the Archdiocesan Standards. Being in an honors level course and learning two sets of standards, students are expected to learn all topics more in depth and at a quicker pace than other 6th grade math students.
As outlined in the State Standards, the focus for 6th Grade will be on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.
The selected Grade 7 standards, as outlined in the State Standards, focus on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers; and (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
The standards above may seem overwhelming; however, many of the selected Grade 7 standards are extensions of the Grade 6 standards. Therefore, by exploration and extension of 6th Grade TEKS, students learn Grade 7 standards. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to enroll in Honors Math 7-8 as 7th graders.
