Our SPECTACOAL design is an ergonomic control system based off the "Jolly Chimp" defending Sunnyside Daycare in Toy Story 3! The SPECTACOAL has:
a single joystick to control BARNACOAL propulsion
a pairing subsystem to select the BARNACOAL and pair accordingly (potentiometer and button)
all controls necessary for anchoring the BARNACOAL and coal dumping
A limit switch attached to a long lasso for the recharging action
Two LEDs (one for pairing and one for charge/empty)
120 degree servo to indicate fuel
Switch for power cycling
The Chassis consists of two 3D printed parts making up the main body, and a single piece of acrylic that is cut and engraved to securely fasten all interactive parts of the SPECTACOAL as well as clearly communicate SPECTACOAL function to other groups as they are assigned ours. The 3D printed parts consist of the main body and the top. The acrylic piece fits between these two parts and is screwed together to ensure that everything fits together well for long term functionality and to withstand the swinging charging action.

Our recharging action is inspired by Woody's voice box pull-string, and consists of a string coming outside of the side of our SPECTACOAL. To recharge, simply let the SPECTACOAL drop to your side and swing it around. 5 Seconds later, you will have a full charge! This works by having the string activate a limit switch when pulled out of the box. The wrist wrap should be on your RIGHT hand!!! This is so that when recharging, your right hand ends up being far far away from the SPECTACOAL, physically unable to control the BARNACOAL. This recharging action motivated the need for
“Swing it like Woody’s lasso — that’s how we charge 'round here!”
Limit Switch + Lasso
The top face of the SPECTACOAL contains most of the functionality and interactive components. The joystick resides in the bottom right corner, allowing for easy access to the most important fucntionality: the propulsion. There are two LEDS: The pairing LED and the Recharging LED. The pairing LED's default state is blinking, meaning unpaired. When the pairing button is pressed and the SPECTACOAL successfully pairs with a BARNACOAL, that LED becomes solid until the two become unpaired. The recharging LED is mostly off, but turns on when the BARANCOAL is out of charge, or whenever the recharging action is occurring, signifying that other inputs from the SPECTACOAL will not be acted on. The SPECTACOAL also contains 3 switches: Power Cycle, Dumping, and Anchoring. The power cycling switch allows for a new BARNACOAL to be paired to.
“Jessie said ‘Yeehaw!’ and she wasn’t even touching the joystick.”
“This controller’s so pretty, even Barbie’s jealous.”
“I’m not just proud… I’m Buzz-ing about this custom remote!”
