The Barnacoal is designed for minimal weight, allowing for the highest possible speed to carry the Toy Story characters to complete their mission in the most efficient manner possible.
The mechanical part of the Barnacoal consists of the chassis, the propulsion system, and the coal dumping system
The chassis is comprised of pontoon inspired base. The buoyancy comes from the two pontoon rails, made of pink foam cut to form with a hot wire. A 3d printed attachment goes around each of the rails to connect the propulsion system below and the deck above. A pool noodle is attached to the waterline of the boat to allow for durability in a potentially high-contact environment.
The deck is laser cut out of Duron, a lightweight wood. Holes are spaced evenly throughout the deck to allow for modular design and rapid design changes in placement. Attached to the deck is the servo mount for our pairing indicator, along with the coal dumping assembly, which is placed at the front of the boat. Attached to the back of the boat is our waterproof container which holds all of our electronics.

The dumping mechanism is comprised of a few parts. The 80 pieces of COAL are contained in the static slanted box, which gives the COAL enough energy to be properly dispensed when the rotating wall is actuated.
The rotating wall is what keeps the COAL contained until the dumping switch is activated. It provides guide walls to guide the COAL into its desired location, and is attached to a servo motor for actuation.
The support of the rotating wall comes from a servo motor on one side, and a support wall on the other side, with a press fit bushing to allow for smooth rotation.

The barnacoal propulsion system consists of two underwater, 4-blade brushless thrusters, one clockwise and one counterclockwise to ensure precision movement through the water. This choice of propulsion allows for ease of use while maintaining substantial power. The thrusters come packaged with easy to use motor ESC's, require no drivetrain design and are inherently waterproof, giving us substantial flexibility in design.
To indicate whether or not the barnacoal is paired with a spectacoal, our friendly Toy Story alien is here to help! When down on its side, the barnacoal is not paired, but when the alien shoots up, you know that the barnacoal is paired and ready to spring in to action!
