The purpose of this project is to design a Bustling Aquacraft Remotely Navigated to Arm COAL (BARNACOAL), a remotely operated watercraft capable of transporting spherical fuel objects (COAL) through a flooded warehouse and depositing them into an aircraft receptacle. The BARNACOAL is controlled by a SPectral Emitter of Commands To Arm COAL (SPECTACOAL), a handheld device operated by a human and equipped with wireless communication, user interfaces for propulsion and dumping, and a physical recharging mechanism. Both the BARNACOAL and SPECTACOAL are built around PIC32 microcontrollers and communicate using a standardized XBee-based protocol developed by a class-wide Communications Committee. During operation, the BARNACOAL must navigate a defined course, avoid alien detection by limiting physical work to charged intervals, and interact seamlessly with any SPECTACOAL to enable coordinated team gameplay.
Straight Out of Andy’s Room and Onto the Water!
The game is played in Terman Fountain at Stanford. The six competing teams are each assigned a SPECTACOAL and BARNACOAL to play each round, and in teams of 3, are loaded with up to 80 pieces of COAL and must navigate the field to get to the RECEPTACOAL to then dump the coal in. This process is then repeated until there is no more COAL at the starting zone, and the teams with the most COAL in the RECEPTICOAL wins.
The BARNACOAL only has 30 seconds of charge, and a physically recharging action must be completed with the SPECTACOAL to recharge the BARNACOAL as needed. The BARNACOAL cannot be operated during recharging.
SPECTACOAL
The SPECTACOAL must be capable of pairing with any BARNACOAL
The SPECTACOAL must have two modes: Drive Mode and Charge Mode
The SPECTACOAL must contain all controls and displays relevant to propulsion, coal dumping, charge status, recharging, and wireless communication
The SPECTACOAL must display the remaining level of charge in barnacoal with, at least, a resolution of 1 part in 5
The SPECTACOAL must incorporate at least 1 analog input and 1 electromechancial output
The SPECTACOAL must contain a XBee radio module to communicate with a BARNACOAL
BARNACOAL
BARNACOAL must have a circumference less than or equal to 6 feet
BARNACOAL shall have a mechanism for carrying/dumping COAL
BARNACOAL shall display the number of the team with digits at least 15CM tall
BARNACOAL must track its own charge status
Once there is zero charge remaining, the BARNACOAL can not perform any work until recharging has occured
BARNACOAL must have an electromechanical indication of its pairing state
