Why do some questions get my students talking and some shut conversation down? Join me as we experience “math talks” and examine the kinds of questions we ask students to elicit student thinking and good conversation. The experience will be based in math but the ideas around good questioning will translate to all content areas. I will share research-backed strategies that can be used in any classroom conversation. We will examine the 4 types of questions teachers ask (probing, funneling, generating, evaluating) and what impact they have on student voice. Teachers will have an opportunity to reflect on their own questions in their specific content areas and consider how they support or suppress student ideas and student talk in the classroom.

Mindfulness can help you practice self-care to be your best self in and out of the classroom, and can support your students with classroom management and behavior, improving learning outcomes. This session will introduce you to mindfulness skills and strategies derived from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps to identify and change negative thinking patterns and encourage positive behavioral changes through Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation.
