WSRGN Career Fair

WHAT: A virtual career fair hosted by the Western States Regional Genetics Network highlighting the different training programs and resources available for prospective students to explore in a very casual, engaging, and informative environment. Each GC training program had their own exhibit room and members of Stanford's SGC DEI AOC were able to answer any questions students had.

WHERE: Held Virtually 

HIGHLIGHT:  This is our fourth year participating in this outreach event and we absolutely enjoyed meeting the prospective students who visited our virtual booth. There were current students, alumni, and current faculty available to answer questions. Looking forward to next year!

Clinical Anatomy Pre-Health Initiative Workshop

WHAT: Current genetic counseling students and genetic counselors share about the genetic counseling profession to high school students enrolled in Stanford's Clinical Anatomy Pre-Health Initiative. This workshop gives underrepresented students a chance to explore various healthcare careers. Topics presented include what is genetic counseling, how to become a genetic counselor and practice cases.

HIGHLIGHT:  We had Brianna Tucker give this year's presentation. There were lots of insightful questions asked and excited around the profession! This is our second year pariticpating and we're looking forward to continuing this outreach activity.

The Many Faces of Genetic Counseling

WHAT: Hear from genetic counseling students and genetic counselors as they share their unique perspectives on becoming a genetic counselor. Participate in an interactive Q&A with panelists in an engaging and meaningful way to learn more about the field of genetic counseling.

HIGHLIGHT:  We had such an insightful 6-person panel who answered many questions from our 65 attendees! A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the event. We look forward to hosting another successful event next year.

WHAT: Hear from genetic counseling students and genetic counselors as they share their unique perspectives on becoming a genetic counselor. Participate in an interactive Q&A with panelists in an engaging and meaninful way to learn more about the field of genetic counseling.

HIGHLIGHT:  Our 6-person panel was able to interact with a total of 64 attendees at the event's height! Thank you to all of the prospective students for all of the thoughtful and engaging questions for  the panelists throughout the night.

HIGHLIGHT:  This small scale, come-as-you'd-like, informal event allowed members to engage with so many different prospective students as they joined our virtual room. There were 3+ volunteers available to answer questions throughout the 3 hours. We absolutely enjoyed speaking with the thoughtful students about Stanford's training program and the field of genetic counseling.

Students Rising Above

WHAT: We collaborated with SRA to provide an introduction to genetic counseling to students seeking to expand their awareness of occupations and practice developing their networking skills with professionals.

Students Rising Above (SRA) believes in the transformative power of education and every day we work to empower underrepresented students with drive and potential to achieve their life goals by connecting them to the tools, resources, and supportive community they need to excel and thrive on their college-to-career journey.

WHERE: Held virtually  

HIGHLIGHT: A 5-person panel of Stanford genetic counseling students and genetic counselors spoke with a group of very thoughtful and engaging students. The small group setting helped faciliate great conversations about the profession.
