From the LD4 Charter (2020):
The Steering Committee administers LD4 Community communication channels, guides LD4 Community development, and delegates responsibilities to chartered committees and other groups. The Steering Committee is self-governing, and determines its own by-laws.
The founding six members of the Steering Committee are the LD4P project’s principal investigators, whose vision laid the groundwork for the LD4 Community. In 2020-21, the Steering Committee was expanded to include three additional members. Over time, and as part of its sustainability planning, membership on the Steering Committee will evolve to reflect the breadth and diversity of the wider community.

The LD4 Steering Committee shall consist of up to nine (9) members with a minimum of the named roles (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer).
The members of the LD4 Steering Committee serve as individuals. Membership is not tied to institutional or project affiliation.
Members of the LD4 Steering Committee serve for a term of three (3) years. A renewal of membership is possible.
The current Steering Committee members shall appoint new members or renew existing members, paying attention to the diversity of the Steering Committee. Terms start on January 1 of the following calendar year.
A member of the LD4 Steering Committee is expected to attend at minimum two thirds of the calls, and all members are expected to contribute, both between and during calls, by participating actively in email discussions and attending calls prepared to participate actively in the call discussions. If after a conversation between relevant parties, or in the event of continued unresponsiveness, Committee members that can not meet participation expectations may have their status reviewed at the discretion of the Chair, with support from voting Committee members.
Steering Committee members can resign at any time with notification to the other members.
In the event that a seat on the Steering Committee becomes vacant part way through a three-year term, the Steering Committee shall decide whether to appoint a new member. The successful candidate will serve the remainder of the three year term. In the event that this period is less than twelve months, their tenure extends to include the next three year period and they may, at the end of it, stand for a further contiguous three-year term.
Decisions in the Steering Committee shall usually be made by consensus; in the event that consensus cannot be reached, decisions shall be reached by a simple majority vote.
Each year, the Steering Committee shall select a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer, each for a one-year term. The Chair will facilitate Steering meetings.
The Steering Committee will meet virtually each calendar month with additional calls as required. There are no in-person meeting requirements.
These bylaws should be reviewed by Steering Committee members each year and may be modified at any time by an absolute 2/3 majority vote of the Steering Committee.
