Undergraduate Research Mentor
SURIM ( Stanford Undergraduate Research Institute in Mathematics) research mentor, Summer 2022.
SURIM is a 10-week summer research program at Stanford University introducing Stanford undergraduate students to research in mathematics.
I mentored a group of 3 undergraduate students in Branching Brownian Motion and reaction-diffusion equations.
Here is the list of problems assigned during SURIM to familiarize students with the field.
Here is our project on voting models on Branching Brownian Motion.
TA Mentoring
I organize the TA Mentoring Program for first time TAs in the Stanford math department. Experienced math TAs serve as teaching mentors to provide advice, feedback and guidance to first-time TAs. Teaching is most fun when it is collaborative, and we can all learn so much from each other!
If you have feedback on the TA Mentoring program, please leave it at this anonymous form.
TEACHING PRIOR TO STANFORD
Head Organizer & Teacher of Mathematics, MathAid Greece, 2016-2019.
MathAidGreece was the first free, online tutoring school in Greece, aspiring to make math education accessible to every student.
I was a head organizer of the initiative and the Head Teacher of Mathematics. In addition to teaching, I co-lead the initiative, fundraised, recruited volunteers and advertised to students. Our students came from low-income families, from remote parts of Greece with little to no access to math education, or were adults going back to school to obtain their high-school diploma . We helped them prepare for their university entrance examinations and had the pleasure of seeing many of them thrive as undergraduate students. We were supported by the Bodossaki Foundation, Social Dynamo. Unfortunately due to lack of volunteer teachers and of funds to maintain the online platform, this initiative is discontinued.
Mathematics Instructor, Discovery Academy for Science and Technology, Shebin Al Kawm, Egypt , Summer 2017.
I taught problem solving for math competitions to children aged 7-15, who were attending the summer session at the Discovery Academy for Science and Technology in Shebin Al Kawm, in Egypt. I developed materials on the Kangaroo math competition. I was supported by AIESEC’s Global Volunteer Program. This was undoubtedly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
TEACHING AWARDS
LIT Fellowship, August 2023- Present.
Joint with Jared Marx-Kuo (2023-2024) and Andrew Lin (2024-2025). We are fortunate to be working with Amanda Modell.
During 2023, Jared and I ran a survey in various math classes to learn about the experiences of undergraduate students in sections and office hours led by math TAs. We created a workshop and a handout with equity-focused teaching strategies. New responses to the survey are most welcome!
We also led quarterly workshops for Math TAs on peer learning, instructor talk, and identity in the classroom.
Andrew and I are continuing this project during 2024-2025 and we are working on an inclusive teaching handbook.
During the fall quarter we run a general how to run section workshop for math TAs.
You are most welcome to use these workshop materials if you wish. We will be offering more TA workshops this year, so stay tuned!
In 2023 I received the Centennial Teaching Assistant Award
In 2022 I received the Robert Osserman Teaching Award.
TEACHING CERTIFICATES
CIRTL @Stanford Teaching Certificate, Associate level , September 2023
CIRTL stands for Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. To obtain this certificate, I completed three pedagogy courses on course design, inclusive teaching and evidence-based methods in STEM teaching. I also facilitated some of the sessions on active learning.
CIRTL @Stanford Teaching Certificate, Practitioner level, August 2024
To obtain this certificate, I completed the week-intensive course Teaching as Research (TAR): Leverage Your Skills as a Scholar to Improve Your Teaching offered by the Stanford Graduate Summer Institute ( SGSI).
I designed and conducted an IRB-approved Teaching-as-Research project in the context of Math Discovery Lab. I investigated the impact of inquiry - based math courses on sense of belonging in mathematics. I collected data via a validated survey on Qualtrics, and through interviews. I summarized my findings in a report submitted to CTL ( Center for Teaching and Learning). I was fortunate to be mentored by Shima Salehi .
Feel free to email me if you are interested in the project report, or more generally in the benefits of inquiry-based learning.
Feel free to email me if you want to talk about the CIRTL certificate program or CTL learning opportunities.
