Check your passport. It must have at least one blank visa page (not including amendment or endorsement pages) and be valid for 6 months past your return date of travel to the U.S. Please note that citizens of some countries may have different passport requirements.
Foreign National Scholars:
Make sure you have proof of U.S. legal residence status (such as a student visa) which you must carry for return to the U.S.
If you are a citizen of China, Malawi, Tanzania, or Vietnam and required a visa to travel to Turkey, check to make sure your visa validity dates are correct. Citizens of the U.S. and Canada do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
Let Meredith know if you are on the list for the group transfer to SFO from Denning House on the Day of Travel page but do not plan to take it. Likewise, let her know if you are not on the list but would like to be.
Review the packing list below.
Avoid bringing Covid-19 or another illness into the group and make every effort to stay healthy prior to departure. We strongly urge you to mask in crowded places like airports and on your flights.
Print the Important Contact Information PDF (also saved on the On The Trip page) and keep it with you or save the info to your phone and/or other personal electronic device.
Make a hard copy printout of the picture page of your passport and carry it separately from your actual passport. This may come in handy in case you lose your passport while traveling. If you have a visa to enter Turkey, print it as well.
Check to see if your credit card company or bank requires notification of travel so any ATM withdrawals or charges you make while traveling will not be questioned.
Make sure you bring a refillable water bottle with you. In keeping with our effort to eliminate single-use plastic bottles on all Travel/Study programs, we ask you to fill your reusable bottle at meals or from containers on our bus to make sure you have plenty of water during the day. The tap water is usually highly chlorinated/treated, so many prefer not to drink it, but it is perfectly safe and fine for brushing teeth, showering, eating uncooked vegetables, etc.
If you require special in-flight meals or want to select seats, request them through the airline website using the airline reservation code(s) on your flight itinerary at least 24-hours prior to travel.
Triple check that you have your travel documents and phone with you before leaving. (These have been forgotten in the past!)
On our Turkish Airlines group flights, the cost of one checked bag per person is included in your airfare. Your overall luggage is restricted to the following:
two checked bags, not to exceed 50 pounds and 62 linear inches each
one carry-on piece, not to exceed 9 x 15 x 22 inches and weighing no more than 17 pounds
one personal item such as a backpack or purse which must fit under the seat in front of you
You are responsible for your own overweight luggage charges if you exceed these limits and for researching luggage allowances if you are on a different airline.
