Pace & free time: This program has a very full schedule, including excursions, tours, discussions, and meetings with local organizations. While there will be some free time, group activities will often keep you busy from breakfast through dinner. Scholars are expected to participate in all scheduled activities and meals unless they are ill.
Accommodations: The Occidental Taksim (Istanbul) boasts a unique location in the Beyoğlu district, a stone's throw from Taksim Square. The Occidental Taksim is well located near some of the city's most important historic monuments as well as restaurants and shops. The hotel features 149 renovated rooms with en suite bathrooms, complimentary Wi-Fi, two restaurants and a café-bar, a fully-equipped gym, and an indoor swimming pool. The Kolin Hotel (Çanakkale) has been recently renovated and offers spacious rooms with en suite bathrooms and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel features four restaurants and a rooftop bar, a fully-equipped gym, and an indoor swimming pool.
Transport: We will travel by coach throughout our program. Drive times range from 15 minutes to 1 hour within Istanbul and 4-5 hours to reach Çanakkale. We will also enjoy a private boat cruise with dinner on the Bosphorus that will last approximately 2 hours.
Physical activity: Those who can easily walk 1-2 miles at a time will be most comfortable on this program. Walking may be on uneven surfaces, such as cobblestone streets or at archaeological sites where steps have no handrails. There may also be opportunities to go for a swim in the ocean; these are optional.
Weather: Expect mild temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the high 70s in degrees Fahrenheit. Rain is unlikely, but possible.

Daily Schedules, Unexpected Changes & Your Tour Staff
To ensure that you can be on time and that you know what to expect each day, your tour manager (Meredith) will announce the following day’s departure time and events at our last group event of the day.
As with all well-laid travel plans, sometimes the unexpected can happen or our plans may change to take advantage of new opportunities. One of the benefits of traveling with Stanford is having a tour manager accompany you to handle all the logistics. We genuinely appreciate your flexibility and patience in advance.
Out of courtesy to your fellow travelers and our local hosts, we expect everyone to be on time for all activities and departures. It is your responsibility to pay close attention to departure times and to be on time. In the event you are not able to join the group for some reason, please let a member of the trip staff know immediately.
Meredith and Kathy are traveling with you to ensure that your experience on this trip is the best it can be. Often an issue or concern can be resolved quickly once the staff is made aware of it. To that end, the sooner you share feedback with someone on the trip staff, the sooner they can act on that information.
Name Tags
A name tag will be provided to you at the start of the trip. Please wear it when participating in group activities. It can make it easier to get to know each other quickly and for our local hosts to know who you are. In many instances it will also serve as your entrance ticket or a way to mark you as a member of our group.
Health & Safety
While on the program, please tell a member of the trip staff as soon as possible if you are not feeling well or if you have a medical situation that needs attention. Illnesses spread quickly in a group, so we ask that everyone use their common sense and basic precautions when dining and traveling together. Consider staying back if you are feeling unwell in order to speed your recovery and avoid spreading anything to the group. Mask if staying back is not possible. We encourage frequent hand washing and the use of antibacterial gel, particularly before meals.
While our schedule will be full of activities, there will be times when you can relax with your fellow scholars and/or partake in an independent activity. If you depart from the group for any reason, or leave the hotel, we strongly encourage you to notify one of the staff or another scholar of your plans and anticipated return time so we are aware. Always have a buddy with you.
Meals
At our hotels, breakfasts are buffets, while most lunches and dinners are pre-arranged set meals in local restaurants. The dietary preferences entered in your Personal Information Form determine what you are served, and on-the-spot modifications can be difficult.
A few things to note about money while on this trip:
Turkish lira is the preferred form of currency. You can exchange US dollars into Turkish lira at any bank or exchange bureau.
You can find up-to-date information and current exchange rates online, for example at Oanda.
Use fresh, new-style bills, as overly worn or outdated bills are often not accepted.
ATMs are readily available in Istanbul and Canakkale. The hotel concierge can direct you to the nearest ones.
Major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard and American Express) are accepted in virtually all hotels, most restaurants and large shops.
You should only need to bring money for personal expenses, additional beverages, snacks, and individual purchases. See below for a full list of what is and is not included.
Included

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the trip and can be accessed at both hotels on our itinerary.
Contact your cell phone provider to find out how you can use your cell phone abroad. Charges will vary depending on the destination and your existing plan. Please note that many U.S. cell phone plans do not include international roaming, and charges can be quite high.
You will need an adapter plug that looks like this to charge any of your electrical devices. If you travel frequently, a universal adapter will cover you on this trip as well as your future travels.
Most laptop computers and digital camera battery chargers can operate on a range of currents from 110-240 volts, in which case a converter is not necessary since the current in Turkey is 220 volts, 50 cycles.
For more details about voltage and plug recommendations, look here.
General Guidelines
The following information is only a guideline. Consult your doctor for medical advice on this program.
Medical care and facilities are readily available in Istanbul and Canakkale, but accessibility and standards of medical services may vary.
You are responsible for bringing an adequate supply of your personal medications as well as medicines for common ailments. Trip staff are not legally allowed to supply these for you.
Note that some medicines that are over-the-counter or prescription in the U.S. may be prohibited in some countries. Check with the foreign embassies and consulates in the U.S. for the country or countries you will be traveling to to find out what medications are prohibited, and speak with your doctor regarding alternate medications to bring, if necessary.
While we are committed to working with scholars with physical limitations, we also ask that prospective scholars be realistic in thinking about what will be required of them and use their best judgement when evaluating their health, physical ability, and the appropriateness of this program for them. If there are concerns, we suggest contacting your personal physician for further counsel on the advisability of taking this trip.
Vaccinations
At the present time, no vaccinations are required for travel on this program.
You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.
Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on your personal medical history, where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control suggests you consider the following:
See your doctor before your trip to allow time for vaccines to take effect, ideally at least four to six weeks before departure.
Digestive Health
Traveler’s diarrhea is the most common health-related travel concern. It is not unusual for travelers to experience one or two days of mild intestinal discomfort at some point during the tour. You can find more information about preventive measures and suggested treatment for traveler’s diarrhea at the CDC website.
Stanford University provides all travelers who are actively enrolled students with medical, accident, and evacuation coverage. A summary of the medical and emergency insurance coverage can be found at this link.
Please note this medical/emergency coverage only applies to the dates of the program. Coverage for any independent pre- or post-trip arrangements will be the responsibility of the traveler.
The insurance is primarily for medical and emergency situations and has very limited coverage for trip delays. It does not cover flight changes; lost, delayed, or stolen luggage; or other personal property.
