Arriving early or departing late? Here is information about how to request additional hotel nights through Travel/Study.
We understand that some of you may wish to have family or friends visit you while you are in Marbella, or perhaps you know people who will be in the area at the same time as you. Guests are welcome to join you for overnight stays in your apartment, space permitting (a maximum of 3 people are permitted in a 1-bedroom apartment and a maximum of 4 people are permitted in a 2-bedroom apartment).
The Monarque Sultan must be informed of any overnight guests and will assess a small fee of approximately €3.27 per night in city taxes (subject to change) for additional guests. This fee can be paid directly to the Monarque Sultan.
While you are welcome to share your accommodations with friends and family, we are not able to accommodate people who are not enrolled in the program on any group excursions, in classes, or at any group meals. These activities and meals are structured to promote a group dynamic among participants, and very often space is limited to a maximum number of participants that will be fulfilled by our group. Thank you in advance for understanding.
This comfortable long-term stay property is located in a quiet neighborhood 2 blocks from the beach and 1 block from a major street that has many businesses and shops. There is little street noise and not much traffic around the hotel. Everything you might need is nearby: pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, beauty salons, gyms, etc. The immediate neighborhood is mainly residential with apartment buildings that have some offices of small businesses on the ground floor.
The well-equipped apartments feature a small kitchen area with a dishwasher, basic utensils and cleaning supplies, a microwave, and a small cooktop. Bathrooms are stocked with a hairdryer, an iron (ironing boards available by request) and have a shower or a shower/tub combination. The hotel provides shampoo and conditioner in every bathroom, as well as a welcome kit with a few toiletries and a solid hand soap.
Satellite TV and broadband internet access are provided in each apartment to help you stay connected; 4 English-language channels are available, and the rest are in Spanish or German. Each apartment has an outdoor terrace with lounge chairs. There is also a 24-hour reception desk for questions big and small. Daily light housekeeping (making beds, sweeping floors, cleaning bathrooms, and emptying trash) is included.
One-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments have been reserved for our group. One-bedroom apartments are approximately 645 square feet and two-bedroom apartments are approximately 860 square feet. One-bedroom apartments are twin-bedded; beds can be pushed together for guests who prefer a larger bed (sheets will still be twin). Two-bedroom apartments have one bedroom with twin beds and one bedroom with a double bed; one bathroom is ensuite and one bathroom is in the hallway.
Please note that while the Monarque Sultan is among the best available long-term stay properties in Marbella for a group our size and is comfortable and modern, it is a casual property—it is not comparable to the luxury accommodations that you may have experienced on other Stanford Travel/Study programs. We have selected the Monarque Sultan due to its location and amenities, which we believe will give you the best sense of truly living in Marbella and be the most comfortable for you for this long-term stay.
There is a breakfast room, a bar/café, and a restaurant on the premises. Grocery stores, bakeries, cafés and restaurants are all located a short walk away. Limited meals are included in our program; as part of the experience we expect travelers will enjoy shopping for and cooking their own meals in their apartment’s kitchenette as well as dining out independently at local restaurants and cafés. Each week, 1 or 2 group dinners at a local restaurant are included as part of the program.
There is an elevator at the Monarque Sultan.
There is a large pool and a small gym with cardio machines (but no weights), and there is no charge to use these facilities. There are also several gyms and yoga studios within a short walk, and short-term memberships can be arranged directly with the facility you choose. Local trip staff can advise you upon arrival of your options and current rates. There is a full-service spa with aestheticians and masseuses at the Monarque Sultan; rates for services vary.
Each apartment is equipped with a hair dryer. You may wish to buy an inexpensive one locally if having a powerful hair dryer is important to you.
Each apartment has a washing machine located in kitchen (as is typical in Spain); there is no clothes dryer in the apartments as clothes are customarily hung on racks (provided) to dry. There are laundromats nearby if you wish to have access to a clothes dryer.
If you use a hearing aid that might be turned off at night or you would otherwise require special assistance in case of an emergency, please advise the reception desk of this fact at the time of check in. If you need emergency services, 112 is the number in Spain to dial for an ambulance, the fire department, or police.
Smoking is not permitted in the apartments and is only allowed in outdoor areas.
The tap water at the Aparthotel Monarque Sultan is perfectly safe to drink. In support of Stanford’s sustainability initiatives, bottled water will not be provided most days, so please bring a reusable water bottle to carry with you for day-to-day outings.
