Pre-Trip Extension in Auckland
January 7 to 9, 2023
January 7 to 9, 2023
Your incredible journey of discovery starts with an early arrival into Auckland, New Zealand's most cosmopolitan city, known as the "city of sails" and the Polynesian capital of the world. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel where your room will be available for immediate check in on arrival. Enjoy a welcome lunch and orientation before joining a private guide for an entertaining walking experience around Auckland's historic marina. Your guide will offer insights into the city that was settled and built by a succession of seafaring people. Explore the changing shoreline, consider the importance of maritime trade to the city and celebrate some of New Zealand's yachting successes. Visit a variety of boat storage stacks, super yachts and the historic second World War Fairmile Motor Launch. Experience America's Cup Headquarters history and learn about the development of Wynyard Quarter. This evening convene for a dinner at a local restaurant. Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (B, L, D)
This morning depart by ferry for Waiheke Island, a short 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke Island is 57 square miles of beautiful sandy beaches, native bush, vineyards, olive groves and laid-back seaside villages. On arrival, transfer to the unique privately-owned Connell's Bay Sculpture Park, where you will see art and nature unite. Owners, John and Jo Gow have a passion for art, theatre and for the natural outdoor environment and bring these interests together to showcase New Zealand sculptors by creating special spaces for site-specific sculpture. Viewing these awe-inspiring art works on a private tour in this environment is an experience to be treasured. Continue with your guide and enjoy lunch at one of Waiheke's top vineyards, Stonyridge Vineyard, before boarding the ferry for the return journey back to Auckland. Transfer back to your accommodation and meet for a dinner at a local restaurant. Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (B, L, D)
