Stanislaus County high school students get connected to UCLA Physician Assistant mentorship program Peter Johansen High School in Modesto . The Career Inspiration Center uses hands on technology to expose students to Career in medicine. The Stanislaus County office of Education partners with The Stanislaus Medical Society for Destination Medicine.

Mary Banh

M.A.T.C.H (Mentoring and Teaching Careers in Healthcare) Director '22

Mary Banh is a 4th year undergrad student at UCLA student who returned to her high school alma mater at Perter Johansen high school to help create a Physician Assistant mentorship program called M.A.T.C.H., (Mentoring and Teaching Careers in Healthcare) to help student connect prepare for what it's really like to peruse a career in the medical industry.

Career Navigator, Peter Johansen High School

Dana Keller is a Career Navigator at Perter Johansen high school in Modesto, California. Dana works on a verity of career and technical education program to help student discover career pathways and prepare for college, trade school or even directly into the workforce after high school.

Mentoring and Teaching Careers in Healthcare [ M.A.T.C.H ]

The purpose of M.A.T.C.H. is to educate underserved high school students about the wide range of mainstream and nonmainstream careers in the medical field, create opportunities for these students to develop and foster interest in pursuing healthcare careers, encourage community and collaboration among pre-health students, and provide personalized educational and career-oriented assistance through mentorship. High school students can work closely with UCLA undergraduates and build a strong mentor/mentee relationship, providing a supportive space to explore or develop perspectives and interests surrounding healthcare careers.

Dallas Plaa

Director II, Career and Technical Education, Educational Options, Stanislaus County Office of Education

Dallas Plaa is the Career and Technical Education Director for the Stanislaus County Office of Education. As the CTE Director for SCOE, Dallas collaborates with SCOE administrators, school districts, local businesses, and post-secondary partners to create and maintain high quality career education programs and opportunities for high school students and adults in Stanislaus County. Before joining the SCOE team, Dallas worked in Ceres Unified for 15 years as an elementary teacher, junior high administrator, elementary principal, and Educational Options Coordinator.

The Career Inspiration Center

The Career Inspiration Center is an exciting and innovative program that includes hands-on learning and career pathway awareness opportunities for Stanislaus County 7th-12th graders of partnering school districts, which include Ceres, Denair, Hughson, and Patterson.

The Career Inspiration Center focuses on 4 career pathways which include Technology, Health, Agriculture, and Manufacturing industry sectors. Students from the partnering school districts will be bussed to the Career Inspiration Center @ Teel, and participate in activities throughout the course of the year. Modesto Junior College will be providing after school seminars in the 4 career pathways, and also offer college credit career guidance opportunities for students. Stanislaus State University will be supporting the program with student facilitator support and additional college awareness and access opportunities for students.

Students who participate in the program will also have access to additional resources and program offerings which may include summer workshops, after school training opportunities, field trips to businesses, educational programs, internships, industry recognized certifications, and an end of year culminating activity.

The following businesses (post-secondary agencies) will be offering program support and guidance include Gallo, VOLT Institute, Bay Valley Tech, Medical Society, National Ag Science Center, Ag Safe, and First Lady Permanente.

Destination Medicine

The purpose of Destination Medicine is to inform and engage students who are interested in a career in medicine as to the value and importance of returning to Stanislaus County upon completing their professional education.

The annual hand-on event has been postponed because of the pandemic, but will return soon.

To continue student engagement, the Stanislaus County Office of Education and the Stanislaus Medical Society had partnered to bring insightful discussions with medical industry professionals to students through the use of online video conferencing platforms. The talks are recorded and hosted on the Destination Medicine website for student to refence and learn more about careers in the medical field.
