Viaró was founded in 1963, fruit of the initiative of parents who wanted an education for their children based on individual attention, freedom and personal responsibility, and a Christian vision of life as they had learned from Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer (1902-1975). Viaró is a corporate apostolic initiative of Opus Dei, a prelature of the Catholic Church, which takes care of the spiritual direction of the school, always respecting the freedom of conscience of all. The school has about 1200 students and 100 teaching staff.
One of the essential characteristics of Viaró is the personal, one to one, attention given to each and every student and family. Each student has his own personal tutor. The tutor is an experienced teacher who pays personal attention to the individual student; his personal circumstances and his academic progress.
A constant objective for Viaró is to nurture a concern for others especially the needy. Projects currently in development include personal attention for handicapped patients at a centre near the school, aids to welfare works of the third world and nutritional aid to families without resources of the district of the Raval of Barcelona.
During their time in Viaró the students learn, among other crafts; drawing, painting, ceramic and modelling techniques. In the department of art workshop studies are combined with open air sketching and drawing, under the direction of teachers who are specialists in the fine arts. The students participate in theatrical productions at the Christmas festival and the annual theatre festival.
An outgoing exchange to Viaró will take place for a period of 3 - 4 weeks during February/March while incoming students will visit St Alban's College during September/October for the same amount of weeks. This exchange is ideal for students who have a keen interest in community service, soccer and STEM initiatives. It will be required from outgoing exchange students from St Alban's College to attend Spanish communication classes as part of the exchange program and to prepare them to be able to communicate at a reasonable level with the students of Viaró.
2019 will be the first exchange to Viaró Global School.
