What are Arepas?
One of our 3rd grade students said that his favorite dish is an arepa! Arepas are cornmeal cakes that were first made in a region that now makes up Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. In Venezuela, arepas are typically smaller and thicker, while in Colombia, arepas are usually sweeter, thinner, and stuffed with cheese. For traditional Venezuelan arepas--click here! We asked a couple of our 6th graders, whose parents are from Mexico, what some of their favorite dishes were. Chorizo and Eggs is a traditional Mexican dish that one of them said is his personal favorite!
The other student said his family makes chicken tamales with mole, and that is his favorite. Click each photo for a recipe to try at home.
