¡Hola, amigos! Whenever I get asked where I am from it always throws me off guard because I never know how to answer. Are they asking where my heritage is from, where I was born, where I grew up, or where I live now? The answer is different for all those questions. My parents are from Mexico and I was born in California. So, I am Mexican American, Latina, and Hispanic. We moved to Indiana when I was 4 so Indy is the only home I remember. Growing up my household was very Hispanic. My parents spoke to my brothers and I in Spanish and we ate all the typical Mexican foods. At home we were taught all the Mexican traditions and holidays. We were also taught how to read and write in Spanish. It wasn’t until I started Kindergarten that I started to learn English. It was not easy at first, but with the help of my teachers I became fluent quickly. I love being bilingual. It has brought so many opportunities into my life. I love that I get to teach in my native language and my second language. What I love most about my culture is the value of family. My family is so important to me and I hope that someday my children grow to love their cultures and who they are as well.
