Hello! I am Mrs. Carolina Murphy. Sunnyside’s new Communities in School Liaison. I was born in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in South America. I am the 5th of seven children. Growing up in a big city, we always had many places to go and things to do. I completed my undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy in Colombia. I always wanted to immigrate to the United States so I knew I needed to be able to communicate in English. Since I love school and learning, I went to a private academy just to learn English at the same time as I was working on my college degree. I got hired by a healthcare company who brought me to Indiana. Part of my practice as a therapist was with the First Steps program and at the Lafayette and Perry Townships School Districts. After a few years, I went back to school in Indiana University to purse a master degree in healthcare. My parents always instill in me the need to better myself and the importance of good family values. I am married. My husband and I have a wonderful 8 year old son. As a family, we love to bowl, play board games and swimming. In my personal time, I enjoy running, playing golf and yoga.
One of my fondest memories and one I enjoyed the most with my family back in Bogotá, was making Colombian tamales for Christmas. It took all of us to put them together. Mom made the corn dough and cooked all the ingredients; once every ingredient was ready, we placed everything on a table in a sequence so each child was responsible to add one item to the tamale and the last one was responsible to fold it in its plantain leaves and tie it. We talked, told stories, laughed, ate and had a great time! I have always been very proud of my Latin American roots, my heritage and my family and cultural values.
Hola, Yo soy Mrs. Carolina Murphy. Soy la nueva liason de Comunidades en la Escuela. Yo nací en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia, en América del Sur. Soy la quinta de siete hijos. Siempre tuvimos muchos lugares a los cuáles ir y cosas que hacer en la gran ciudad. Completé mi grado universitario como Terapista Ocupacional en Colombia. Yo siempre planeé inmigrar a los Estados Unidos, asi que sabía que debía poder comunicarme en Inglés. Siempre he amado la escuela y el aprendizaje. Me inscribí entonces a una academia privada sólo para aprender Inglés al mismo tiempo en el que estaba trabajando en mi grado unversitario. Luego fuí contactada por una compañía de salud quien me trajo a Indiana. Una parte de mi práctica como terapeuta fué con el programa de Primeros Pasos y con los distritos escolares de Lafayette y el condado de Perry. Después de algunos años, regresé a la Universidad de Indiana y logre mi magistrado en salud. Mis padres siempre me instigaron la necesidad de convertirme en una mejor persona y la importancia de buenos valores familiares. Estoy casada. Mi esposo y yo tenemos un maravilloso hijo de 8 años. Como familia, nos gusta jugar bolos, juegos de mesa y nadar. En mi tiempo personal me gusta correr, jugar golf y hacer yoga.
Uno de mi más profundos recuerdos y el que disfruté mas con mi familia en Bogotá fue el de cocinar tamales Colombianos para Navidad. Siempre tomó de todos nosotros armarlos. Mamá hacia la masa de harina de maíz y cocinaba los demás ingredientes; una vez todos los ingredientes estaban listos, los poníamos en una mesa en fila de manera que a cada uno nos correspondía añadir un ingrediente y al último en la fila le correspondía doblar y atar el tamal en las hojas de plátano. Nosotros hablábamos, contábamos historias, reíamos, comíamos y pasábamos un buen rato!
