Debate 1
Debate 1 is an introduction to various forms of public speaking and debate. This year the course is focused on: how to give a speech, Congress debate, debate terminology, Public Forum debate, team debate, and students will also learn about Interpretation events.
Debate 2 and Debate 3 (Debate PLUS)
Debate 2 and 3 are classes for students who are part of the competition team so they can continue building their skills from Debate 1 and prepare for tournaments. Tournament participation is mandatory.
Public Speaking 1
Public Speaking 1 is an introduction to various forms of public address and debate. The course is usually similar to Debate 1, but with more of an emphasis on informative and persuasive speaking.
Public Speaking 2 and Public Speaking 3
Public Speaking 2 and 3 are classes for students who are part of the competition team so they can continue building their skills from Public Speaking 1 and prepare for tournaments. Tournament participation is mandatory.
Class versus Club versus Competition Team
*Students in Debate 1 and/or Public Speaking 1 classes are not required to compete; thus it is possible to take the class without competing. HOWEVER, students must prepare as if they ARE going to compete as what they produce will earn them major grades. Debate 1 and Public Speaking 1 students are HIGHLY encouraged to compete and/or attend a tournament with the team to see how they work.
*Students in Debate 2, Debate 3, and Public Speaking 2 are required to compete.
**Students may join the club and hang out with the team without competing, but they must not be a distraction to the students who are preparing for competition.
**Competition students are considered "novice" during their first year of competition. After that, they are no longer "novice" for the purpose of competition, even if they compete in new events.
