Grading Policy

As we are starting to see grades going into the grade book, you might be trying to sort out my grading policy.

  • Assignments and Assessments that I grade for achievement (not just a completion score) will have an achievement score AND an approaches to learning score (ATL)
  • There will not be 2 scores for completion graded assignments. When graded only for completion, the only thing assessed is ATL related.
  • Achievement Score: The score a student earns based upon standards, skills, content, and IB strands.
  • Approaches to learning (ATL): This is the score a student earns based upon academic behaviors and study habits.
  • The ATL score is worth 20% of the assignment/assessment value. For example: if the assignment is worth 100 points, then the ATL score is worth 20 points.
  • Late points will ALWAYS be deducted from the ATL score. Timely completion is a valuable habit that successful students maintain, but it is not an indicator of weather or not a student understands necessary content.
  • Other factors that can contribute to the ATL score: seeking support, communicating questions and contributions in and out of class, taking advantage of available resources, proactive communication, work that reflects best effort, following directions, etc. Please see my syllabus for a rubric outlining ATL behaviors.
  • All incomplete assignments will have an I in the grade book. If the assignment is not completed and turned in to my late basket, the grade will turn to a 0 when I post grades.
  • 'T' in the grade book means Turned-in. I often do this to indicate that an assignment has been turned in, but it will take me a while to grade it. It does NOT impact student grade
  • 'M' in the grade book means the assignment/assessment is missing. This calculates as a 0 in the grade book.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions. This is a different grading system than what you may have had in the past; it is designed to help students. Students and parents will be able to determine where a student might be struggling based upon this style of grading.
