SPORTING GLORY

Sporting fixtures are coming thick and fast and we have recently fielded teams in local football, tag rugby and cross competitions. Over to Danny Cain, our Sports Coach, for some in-depth analysis of the performances. "First up we travelled to the Russell School for our first tag rugby league fixture, hoping to build on our recent second place finish at the Richmond Borough Tournament. After a slow start we soon got into our groove and played some great rugby - our defensive play a particular highlight. Our ability to win back possession quickly has been a major factor in our success and this was evident on the day. Seb and Thomas led the charge with some scintillating tries. We battled and managed to secure an 8-1 (40-5) win. Well done to Hettie, Isla, Seb, Sam, Thomas, Eli, Freddie,Theo and George.

Next up we attended the Year Five and Six cross country competition. The children have been preparing for this in our PE lessons which was evident on the day. Our boys all finished in the top thirty and our girls did extremely well too, with Violet taking the biggest plaudits of the morning, finishing fourth overall in the girls race. This was a massive achievement as she is in Year Five and was one of the youngest runners on the day. Well done Eva, Violet, Isla, Mollie, Amelia, Hettie, Raff, Alex, Freddie, Shan-Wei, Oli and Albert."

We also caught up with Mr Dale for a report on the recent girls' football match. "Girls from Years Five and Six competed at NPL against other schools in the borough. They worked brilliantly as a team, encouraging each other from the first whistle. The girls did a tremendous job, not conceding a single goal until the quarter finals which unfortunately saw us defeated. They should be hugely proud of themselves. Well done Mollie G, Sybil, Hettie, Madi, Annie, Mila, Persey, Alice, Emi and Florence."

Thank you so much to Mr Cain, Mr Dale and Mr Munn for coaching and accompanying our teams.

Here are our Reading Leaders. Year Five's Owen is not shown but is also a Reading Leader

READING LEADERS - REPORT BY ZOE

Being a Reading Leader is a big responsibility. We have many jobs to fulfil, such as tidying the Reading Shed, reading with younger children and organising the library. Nevertheless, it is a fun role and we are looking forward to participating in and running events like World Book Day.

We also hope to encourage reading with displays and library days ( a time when younger year groups pick out books). I was chosen for this role, like my fellow Reading Leaders, because I have a passion for reading. However, reading is for everyone and is such a wonderful hobby. We can recommend many, many books that we have enjoyed reading. Although, in my view any book is worth reading. Happy reading.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS IN RE

It is most definitely beginning to look and sound a lot like Christmas in Year Five, where the children's RE topic is all about the true Christian meaning of Christmas. They have been comparing Christmas songs and carols and finding out all about the differences and similarities. To find the origin of the traditional Christmas carol, they travelled back to the fourteenth century, when religious songs were performed and danced to in the midwinter to keep people's spirits high. The word carol comes from the old French word 'carole,' which meant a popular circle dance accompanied by singing. Carols are often set to music by composers, such as Gustav Holst. They tell the story of the Nativity and were a great way to spread the Christian message. In the coming weeks the children will be looking at how the Nativity is depected in art and drama.
