Welcome to the weekly Wellbeing page. In this space, we aim to share insights, tips, and resources to support the mental and emotional health of our whole school community. While we will often anchor these pieces to a weekly theme, we’ll also keep things flexible to address the topics that matter most to our families as the term progresses.
Friendships are vital for growth, but they often come with ups and downs. This week, we are sharing two key resources to help you support your child through playground disagreements and social challenges.
It’s natural to want to 'fix' things when your child is upset, but Place2Be, a leading children's mental health charity, suggests that these moments are vital for building resilience.
Top Tips:
Listen Before Stepping In: Take a moment to manage your own reactions. Really listening to your child’s feelings helps them feel understood and supported.
Normalise Falling Out: Remind them that it’s perfectly ordinary for friends to disagree. You don’t have to agree on everything to be a good friend.
Name the Emotion: Help them label their feelings (e.g., "It sounds like you felt hurt"). Once the emotion is named, they can move past the hurt and start problem-solving.
Empower Them: Encourage your child to come up with their own solutions by asking, "What do you think you could do next?" Practise Skills: Use stories or TV shows to discuss what makes a good friend, focusing on compromising and listening.

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is a schools-based service, supporting children, young people and parents’
emotional wellbeing in a range of ways.
We work with children and young people, from the age of
5 to 18, who experience difficulties with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. These can be common for lots of young people and might include sadness, feeling low, anxiety or low self-esteem.
In primary schools, we also offer parents individual guided self-help sessions based on cognitive behaviour therapy principles, either around supporting their child to manage anxiety, or behaviour that challenges.
