Summer and Sensory Processing Issues

For kids with autism or sensory processing issues, summer can be a challenging time. Because they can be extra-sensitive to light or certain sounds and textures, they may dislike things other kids enjoy, from playing in the sand on the beach to watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. But with a little planning, parents can help them enjoy the season on their own terms.

This week on childmind.org, we’re offering tips on helping kids with sensory processing issues navigate overstimulating summer activities. Planning ahead and letting kids know what to expect are key, whether you’re going on vacation or just heading outside on a blazing hot day. And because getting surprised by unfamiliar sensations can lead kids to act out, we have advice for smoothing transitions from one environment to another. Instead of avoiding potentially stressful activities, it’s better to help kids prepare for them — with earplugs, sunglasses, or comfortable clothing. Showing kids how to deal with unpleasant sensory experiences helps them recognize their needs and learn to manage situations on their own.
