Turkey-Syria Earthquake DEC Fundraiser raised over £5,000 (and still counting)!
“It was a really emotional event. We were so happy to see the support from our school and the community”
Following the devastating news from Turkey and Syria, a group of Richmond-based mums started thinking of ways they could help, since they were unable to send goods to the earthquake region. So they thought they would sell the goods they wanted to send, collect the monies and send those to the victims of the earthquake instead.
Over local 50 women, including many St Stephen’s parents and the Turkish Group Richmond, got together to make this happen. After pooling ideas and resources, they hosted a wonderful fundraiser in the school hall last Sunday. Comprising 18 stalls, selling items ranging from hand-made oil paintings to ceramics, pet shop items to clothing and shoes for all ages and genders, the event was a fantastic success. As well as the stalls, there was also traditional music and food stalls, plus face painting.
Their children helped out at the event, as well as Waldegrave School students, who came to fold 1,000 crane birds and houses. Children built origami houses and gave them to those whose houses were demolished with the aim of teaching them empathy for the victims while they were playing.
DEC was in constant communication with them throughout the event and both the school and FOSS supported too.
Fulya, one of the event organisers, says, “We were incredibly touched by the fact that everyone united and supported us." She is keen to stress the success of the marvellous event was down to our wonderful community. “Thank you very much to those who donated, helped and came to shop and support us," continued Fulya. Together, we raised more than £5,000 for DEC’s Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal.
