Year 3
Shakespeare - Year 3 had the chance to put into life their learning on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. They freeze framed some scenes from the play and then added speech, learning about how to use speech marks.
Other Faiths - As part of our PSHCE topic, year 3 had the chance to visit the Suleymaniye Mosque. This linked really well to their learning on different cultures and beliefs of local people in our community.
Science - The children helped to design an experiment to investigate the different permeability of different types of soil. They learnt about what makes an experiment fair. Certain factors such as the amount of water, soil and time had to be kept the same. The water was measured using the beakers which linked to their Maths learning on capacity.
Year 4
Settlements - In Geography, Year 4 have been learning all about settlements and what makes a place a good one to live in. We put our knowledge into action by designing our own settlements, thinking carefully about what we would need to include—like homes, schools, transport and green spaces. Using classroom resources and natural materials on the school grounds, we built our towns on the tables and even created our own keys to show the different features. A fun and creative way to explore human geography!
Shakespeare - In English, Year 4 have been diving into the world of Macbeth! We focused on the spooky witches’ poem and brought it to life by performing it in groups. The children had great fun using dramatic voices and actions to capture the eerie mood—there were some truly spine-tingling performances!
'Newspaper Reports - This half term, Year 4 have been busy putting their journalism skills to the test by writing newspaper reports inspired by the environment around St Helen's School. After exploring the school grounds — including a visit to the mysterious foxes' den — pupils conducted interviews with Miss Morgan and Mr Fox to gather eyewitness accounts and expert opinions. We also researched the local wildlife found in and around our school and looked into ways we can help attract even more creatures to our grounds. From headline writing to quoting sources, Year 4 have become true environmental reporters!
Religion - This term in religion, Year 4 explored the parable of the Prodigal Son. We discussed its meaning and message, then brought the story to life through role-play and freeze frames. The children enjoyed stepping into the characters’ shoes and thinking deeply about forgiveness, choices, and love.
Structures - In DT, Year 4 have been learning all about shell structures—designed to protect, contain and present. We've explored real-life examples and discovered clever techniques to make structures stronger, such as corrugating, laminating and layering. The children have been putting their skills to the test by designing and making their own shell structures with creativity and care.
Exercise! - Year 4 love Wake Up Wednesday! It was our turn to get everyone moving in the morning, and we had so much fun leading the dances and sharing our energy with the rest of the school. A great way to start the day with smiles and stretches! Thank you Mr Downer and Miss Cascayan.
Women's History Focus - As part of Women’s Week, Year 4 explored the lives of inspiring women who made important contributions to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We researched their achievements and wrote powerful speeches, stepping into their shoes to tell their stories. It was a brilliant way to celebrate their impact and learn how they helped shape the world we live in today.
