Year 5
Art - Castles and Palaces - During our art lessons year 5’s have looked at the features of castles and palaces around the UK. Using this knowledge and their use of proportion they have been able to draw some of the King’s residences in the UK and use their shading and blending techniques to add depth and texture to make their drawings more life-like.
Geography - As part of our geography unit, we are learning about Italy this term. Year 5 enjoyed creating one of Italy’s signature dishes - pizzas! They used their skills to spread the tomato sauce and sprinkle the cheese and herbs onto their pizza bases.
Maths focus week -During Maths focus week, year 5 were tasked with raising money for CAFOD and decided to run a craft fair for St Helen's. They spent time thinking about the products they would sell to make sure they could make enough profit
Science - Year 5 explored the effects of air resistance by designing and creating their own parachutes to protect eggs. They used their creativity to investigate the effect the surface area of the parachute had on air resistance and the speed at which the egg falls. After creating their parachutes, they dropped the eggs in the parachutes from the balcony and timed how long it took each parachute to reach the ground.
Year 6
Shakespeare - As part of our Shakespeare focus weeks, Year 6 enjoyed a workshop on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The children retold the story through drama and had fun bringing the words of Shakespeare to life.
Maths - Year 6 recently visited Kempton Park racecourse for a day of practical Maths activities. The children learned about measurements (imperial and metric), estimating, averages and more. The children then got to watch a few races and see the jockeys with their horses in post-race interviews. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and saw how maths is used in everyday life.
