West Ham Park Workshops
At St Helen's, pupils in Years 1–6 are provided with the opportunity to participate in outdoor learning and fieldwork through the West Ham Park workshops. These sessions allow children to explore and engage with the natural environment while developing key geographical skills. These workshops also offer valuable cross-curricular links with subjects such as art and history, helping to provide a rich and well-rounded learning experience. Some of the workshops children attend across the various year groups include: Bear Hunt, Blitz Detectives, Orienteering, and Eco Art, all of which are enthusiastically enjoyed by our students.

Year 1 - Bear Hunt

Year 1 participate in a workshop called 'Bear hunt' which is based on the book 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen. The children take part in the story as they explore and see it come to life! The story is firstly read by a member of the team and then the children have the chance to play a mixture of games and activities along the way on their bear hunt. The students aim to get through the variety of obstacles and make their way to the bear's cave.

Year 2 participate in the Eco Art workshop where they get creative and make art inspired by nature with a member of the team. They also have a chance to look at a variety of examples of eco-art and discuss the textures, colours and patterns in groups. Children use their fine motor skills to produce mosaics, sculptures and a mud painting art piece.

Year 3 have fun in their Eco Art workshop where they build on their creative skills making nature inspired art. They have the opportunity to see some lovely examples of eco art by a famous artist called Andy Goldsworthy and discuss the textures, colours and patterns in groups. All children are included to create mosaics, sculptures, and Hapa Zome (the art of Japanese leaf bashing).

Year 4 and 5 both have an exciting orienteering workshop where they compete in the orienteering challenge, building on their teamwork and communication skills. They use a variety of landmarks and compasses to orientate their map before setting off to explore the park in teams.

Year 6 participate in the Blitz Detectives workshop where they become detectives and unearth clues to the local events that took place in WW2. They have the opportunity to develop their map reading, code breaking and problem solving skills. This enables the children to discover what happened at the park during the war in an engaging way.
