The Art & Design curriculum’s intentions are to develop the artistic, creative and cultural awareness of pupils. All children are exposed to a variety of creative experiences allowing flexible and innovative thought. Artists inspire learning both in the school environment and out on educational visits. The curriculum units are progressive and a variety of media is explored and used. Pupils therefore build on their art skills which are enhanced through an engaging curriculum full of exceptional experiences.

Teachers ensure that all children have a creative outlet as a tool of relaxation. Pupils are also aware that developing artistic skills require time and practice, this attitude well links with the school’s growth mindset approach. For these reasons, Art and DT are generating a variety of life skills and well-being.

Gospel Values and Catholic Social Teaching are imperative to everything we do at St. Helen’s. Art and Design plays a significant role in enhancing tolerance and peace. A clear example of this approach is the Arts focus weeks in which pupils learn about Art in different cultures. Also, providing opportunities to critique work builds pupil’s tolerance and acceptance of others’ opinions. The Art curriculum celebrates diversity through learning about a diverse range of artists.
