Year 4 visit to the Courtauld gallery
June 2024
Year 4 children explored how in the 13th century artists used minerals (like lapis lazuli for blue), and insects (like beetles for red) to make colours, mixing them with egg and the effect these mixtures had over time. Pupils discovered that the most used colour in Mediaeval times was gold, the virgin Mary would wear red and blue because blue won't fade away and red because it was very expensive and difficult to make.
Finally children observed how Impressionist artists like Monet and Seurat in the 19th century used complementary colours like orange and blue, green and red, experimenting with complementary colours of their choice.
Year 5 visit to the Rijks museum in Holland
June 2024
As part of their residential in Holland, the Year 5 children visited the Rijks museum, where they learned more about Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Vincent Van Gogh. They looked at similarities and differences between the three artists, reflecting on use of techniques, the light, the colours and the subjects portrayed. Pupils also reflected on the struggles of an artist when his/her work is not appreciated.
Artist workshops in school

During Arts weeks we hosted a real artist in school who delivered a variety of workshops linked to our Curriculum map and focus weeks:
Year 1 focused on 3D sculptures using a variety of media to create animals
Year 2 used different techniques when applying water colours
Year 3 learned how to apply tone and shadows
Year 5 created 3D sculptures applying colours and patterns using a variety of media
Year 6 experimented with a range of media
Year 2 visit to Tate Britain
June 2024
During Arts weeks the Year 2 children have been learning about William Turner and his techniques used to paint water. They then visited the Tate Britain to better understand the 'impasto' technique and to explore other artists too.
Year 3 visit to William Morris gallery
April 2024
The Year 3 children visited the William Morris gallery, learning more about his designs, patterns and the techniques. The pupils saw first hand the nature in the surrounding gardens which inspired much of his work. They were able see up close the wooden blocks which he used his prints, and also had the chance to design and make their own block prints.
Year 5 visit to Vatican Museums
February 2024
Some of the Year 5 pupils had the opportunities to visit the immense collection of the Vatican Museums in their residential in Rome. Here they observed how Art changed through centuries and admire the Sistine chapel.
Year 4 visit to the Manga exhibition at the V&A
February 2024
The Year 4 went to the V&A museum because they have been learning about different styles of manga in Art. In the exhibition the children observed different types of art such as sculptures made out of car parts, ancient Japanese drawings and modern ones like Sailor Moon.
In the gallery the pupils also had a go at making origami, playing the Japanese drums and drawing mangas as well as reading actual mangas and books about Japan and the Japanese language!
Year 4 visit to the Cartoon Museum
January 2024
The year 4 pupils visited the where they saw caricatures of famous people like Queen Elizabeth as well as cartoon drawings such as Wallace and Gromit.
They then had a drawing session with an artist in which they drew Batman and Wonder woman, using shapes to facilitate the process. Finally they drew two caricatures: Boris Johnson and Donald Trump.
In the workshop the pupils learnt different types of ways of drawing facial features like eyes, noses, mouths and the mistakes that we should avoid.
Year 3 Identity workshop at the Courtauld gallery

The Year 3 children visited the Courtauld Gallery and had the chance to see iconic Impressionist masterpieces such as Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergère and Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. The children thought about how the use of colour influences paintings and put that into use when drawing their own portraits.
