READING
Dear Rising 8 th Graders:
Congratulations on a great year! You are now the new student leaders of the school! As you prepare for your summer of fun and relaxation, I want to welcome you to 8th grade as well as remind you of the summer reading. You need to read two books over the summer. The first book for required reading is either The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton or Ghost by Jason Reynolds. The second book you may choose from the following: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Crossover by Kwame Alexander, As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac, Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston, Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson, Ghost by Jason Reynolds or A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielson. If you have read all the books, please email me so we can find something new for you to read. Enjoy your reading! Please bring a list of all the material you read over the summer to class on the first day of school along with the book you are reading. I am looking forward to seeing and meeting all of you in the fall. Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation.
Sincerely,
Ms. Lynn Dickson
8th Grade Summer Reading Projects
For both books – Use sticky notes or a highlighter to indicate story elements and literary devices/writing techniques that you find as you read the book you choose. You should also mark quotes that you find important to the theme of the book. Please bring the books to class on the first day of school.
For one book - Choose one of the books and create a 1-2 minute video of yourself talking about the writing techniques you liked in the book and why. Be specific and give examples.
****Please keep a booklist of all the books you read this summer. Bring list and book you are reading to class on the first day of school.
****I will be updating our google classroom throughout the summer. Please feel free to email me with any questions that you have.
Sincerely,
Ms. Lynn Dickson
