Summer Assignments

June 1, 2023

Dear Rising 8th Graders:

Congratulations on a great year!  You are now the new student leaders of the school!  As you prepare for your summer of fun and relaxation, I want to welcome you to 8th grade as well as remind you of the summer reading.  You need to read two books over the summer.  The first book for required reading is either The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton or Ghost by Jason Reynolds. The second book you may choose from the following: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton or Ghost by Jason Reynolds, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, The Maze Runner, The Death Cure or Scorch Trials by James Dashner, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Crossover by Kwame Alexander, As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac, or A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielson. If you have read all the books, please email me so we can find something new for you to read. Also, if you are reading one of the series from above and would like to read a different book in the series, just email me and let me know. Enjoy your reading! Please bring a list of all the material you read over the summer to class on the first day of school along with the book you are reading. I am looking forward to seeing and meeting all of you in the fall. Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lynn Dickson

8th Grade Summer Reading Projects

You will be working on two projects this summer.  You are to write a book review for The Outsiders or Ghost in googledocs and turn it into google classroom. You are to complete the story map for your other book. Please bring the story map on the first day of school.

Project 1 – Write and submit a book review in google classroom about The Outsiders or Ghost. Please complete this book review by August 20th  and turn it in to google classroom. Then record yourself reading your review on Flip. See the link in Google classroom for this activity.

Project 2 – Please complete the story map for the second summer reading book. Please create this story map on a 12" x 18" piece of construction paper. Type the elements for the story map and glue them on. You may add pictures (hand drawn or computer generated) to enhance the look of your story map. Click on story map format in google classroom to view requirements.  If you do not know a term, you may have to do some research. If a book does not have one of the writing techniques/elements listed, do not put it on the story map. Please bring this project on the first day of the school year.

****Please keep a booklist of all the books you read this summer. Bring list and book you are reading to class on the first day of school.

****I will be updating our google classroom throughout the summer.  Please feel free to email me with any questions that you have.
