As you approach the beginning of your 8th grade year, you should be thinking about where you would like to attend high school and should be researching the schools you are interested in attending. Below are a few steps that you will need to take.
Recommendations: Many high schools require at least two teacher recommendations - one from the student's current English teacher and one from the current math teacher. Please be sure to submit these requests early. Once you determine that you need a recommendation from a teacher, politely talk to or email the teacher about filling out the paperwork and writing a letter. Most requests for recommendations are now made online through the high school to which you are applying. Please provide the teacher with the list of activities that you have been involved in during middle school. The list of activities should include clubs, sports, school activities, accomplishments and volunteer work so that the teacher can write a wonderful recommendation for you. Be sure to thank the teachers you ask!
Transcripts: Many schools request that your first semester transcripts be sent to the high school to which you are applying. In order for SSPP to send the transcripts, you need to fill out a transcript release form for each school. SSPP will not be able to send the transcripts without a signed transcript release. Please direct transcript requests to the school office. The transcripts will be sent directly to the schools.
Testing: Please check individual school websites for dates of entrance and scholarship exams. Students applying to private Catholic schools take the HSPT. Bishop Shanahan applicants and all our 8th grade students will take the HSPT in September at SSPP. Please be sure to check with the school you are interested in attending to determine all the entrance requirements.
Other Requirements: In addition to the components outlined above, schools may have other requirements specific to their process such as a letter/essay/personal statement written by the student that discusses the student's interests, experiences, dreams, etc.. Some may also ask for a third recommendation.
If your child is planning to attend a public school, please contact your school district or access their website for more information. Usually you will be directed to speak with a guidance counselor who will supply you with information and dates for registration and any testing requirements.
This is an exciting time in your life! Take ownership of the process while being sure to ask for help and guidance from your parents and teachers as you make your decision.
