High School Application Process

As you approach the beginning of your 8th grade year, you should be thinking about where you would like to attend high school and should be researching the schools you are interested in attending. Below are a few steps that you will need to take.

Recommendations: Many high schools require at least two teacher recommendations - one from the student's current English teacher and one from the current math teacher. Please be sure to submit these requests early. Once you determine that you need a recommendation from a teacher, politely talk to or email the teacher about filling out the paperwork and writing a letter. Requests for recommendations may be made online or you can submit a paper copy of the recommendation form. In either case, please be sure to have your parents sign the waiver that waives your right to have access to the recommendations. SSPP will not be able to send the teacher recommendations without a signed waiver from your parents. Most of the high schools have a direct link that is sent to the teacher via email. Please provide the teacher with the list of activities that you have been involved in during middle school along with a stamped envelope if the recommendation needs to be mailed. The list of activities should include clubs, sports, school activities, accomplishments and volunteer work. The resume that you are creating in computer class may contain all the information that the teacher needs to complete a wonderful recommendation for you. Be sure to thank the teachers you ask!

Transcripts: Many schools request that your first semester transcripts be sent to the high school to which you are applying. In order for SSPP to send the transcripts, you need to fill out a transcript release form for each school. SSPP will not be able to send the transcripts without a signed transcript release. Please direct transcript requests to Barb McCarron. The transcripts will be sent directly to the schools.

Testing: Please check individual school websites for dates of entrance and scholarship exams. Students applying to private Catholic schools take the HSPT. Bishop Shanahan does not require you to take an entrance exam; however, there is a scholarship exam offered. Please be sure to check with the school you are interested in attending to determine the entrance requirements.

Other Requirements: In addition to the components outlined above, schools may have other requirements specific to their process such as a letter/essay/personal statement written by the student that discusses the student's interests, experiences, dreams, etc. Some may also ask for a third recommendation.

If your child is applying to a public school, please contact your school district or access their website for more information. Usually you will be directed to speak with a guidance counselor who will supply you with information and dates for registration and any testing requirements.

This is an exciting time in your life! Take ownership of the process while being sure to ask for help and guidance from your parents and teachers as you make your decision.
