The fifth grade math program emphasizes an understanding of concepts, mastery of skills, problem solving and application into real world situations through instruction and practice.
Miss Caruso will be teaching the green level math class and Mrs. Thompson will teach the white level group.
In compliance with the State Standards, Miss Caruso and Mrs. Thompson’s basic instruction is in, but not limited to, the following critical areas:
Writing and interpreting numerical expressions
Using equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions
Fluency of the four operations of fractions
Extension of division to include multiple digit divisors
Integration of decimal fractions into the place value system
Performing operations of decimals to the hundredths
Developing fluency with whole numbers and decimal operations
Understanding the concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and division
Converting like measurement units within a given measurement system
Representing and interpreting data
Graphing points on a coordinate plane to solve real world and mathematical problems
The white level goal is designed to build on material learned in the fourth and fifth grades and develop the concepts to prepare students to move onto sixth grade. It is our goal to build a strong understanding of fundamental math and strengthen skills previously taught. The green level builds on concepts and skills from both fifth and sixth grade. In our math books, the practice questions that the students answer daily are separated into different categories. There are basic, average, and challenge questions. Each day, the students are able to answer the basic questions and then have the opportunity to become challenged with every lesson.
Mrs. Caruso also touches on the following areas of sixth grade:
Expand the scope of problems for which they can use multiplication and division to solve problems and they connect ratios and fractions
Extend previous understanding of fractions and ordering of numbers
Introduce the understanding of the use of variables in mathematical expressions
Use expressions and formulas to solve problems
Begin to develop their ability to think statistically
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume
