Apps Approved for Student Use

For apps that require students to log in, teachers will need permission before using them with students 13 or younger. Since we are creating a digital footprint for our students we need to be conscience of the type of data we are associating with them and how that data is secured. There are currently two ways for teachers get permission to use an app that requires students to log in.

1. Send a permission slip home explaining to parents how the app is being used in the classroom. A positive response is required for the student to use that app.

2. Use app that are listed on the district approved list for which the district has a contract already OR request the district obtain a contract for that app.

Questions:

1. Do I need to get approval for every app I use in the classroom? NO, You only need approval if the app requires the student to log in and thus you’re creating a digital footprint for that child.

2. Once an app is on the approval list, what do I need to do? Nothing, the district has a contract with that site protecting student data and the app can be used in the classroom

3. If the site uses Google to log in, do I need approval? Yes, the Google button is just a way to authenticate the student, however the site is still capturing data associated with that student and thus needs either parent permission or a district approval.

4. How do I get parent permission for apps not on the list? Part 2 of the roll out. We are working on finalizing an agreement with InformedK12 to create a form that teachers can send electronically home to capture permission and will have the legal verbiage. I hope to have this in a few months, definitely in time for start of next school year.
