What is referencing?

• Referencing is the way you acknowledge the information sources you have used to develop your ideas for an assessment task. Sources may include words from published text, images, video, audio, statistics or websites.
• Referencing enables you and your readers to locate your sources, avoid plagiarism and demonstrate academic integrity.
• There are different styles of referencing; they collect, arrange and present information about the information source differently. At Nowra Anglican College we use the Harvard (Author-Date) system. This is important to remember: Harvard (Author-Date).
• Reference List vs. Bibliography: All works that you have quoted or paraphrased should be included in a Reference List at the end of your assignment. A Bibliography, meanwhile, lists all the material you have consulted in preparing your essay, whether you have actually referred to and cited the work or not. At NAC we only create Reference lists at the end of your assignment.
• One further aspect is In-Text Referencing. This is how to we acknowledge the author of quotes in an essay along with the author of ideas that we are paraphrasing in our writing. We will address this later in this page. In-text references including the author’s surname and the year of publication should be shown in brackets wherever another source has contributed to your work
