Most students have worked on projects individually. You may have conducted some research or given a presentation on your own. However, PBL is different because you will be working in groups outside the class. By working in teams you will develop collaboration skills (collaboration: the act of working together with one or more people to produce something). However, working in groups also raises a number of challenges and problems that you will need to deal with.
You are going to complete a collaborative activity set by your teacher.
After completing your task, discuss the following questions in your team. Use your experience of the activity and the word cloud below to help you with ideas. This is called reflection.
In what ways was working in a team different from working alone?
What other skills were required for your team to work well together?
Why are collaboration skills important in the modern world
For more information about reflection see Gibbs' Reflection Cycle Worksheet in Appendix 1. Also in Unit 2 CIS
Managing people
How are members often different from one another in a group?
What should people do if they are asked to do something that they don’t want to do?
How should people tell other members that they are not doing their job, or check what they have completed?
What should happen if one team member wants to do everything, or some people don't want to share their work?
What should people do if they don’t understand what to do, or they forget?
How can people deal with stress? (Example: Giving Presentations)
Your Contribution
What do you think you could contribute to a group?
For this activity, you are going to write four paragraphs together. Your aim is to think about an ideal team and how it should be organised.
Refer back to your notes in Activity 2
Answer the following questions in paragraph form. Write one small paragraph for each question.
You need to collaborate to produce one text together. The title is ‘Ideal Group Collaboration’.
Look at the writing tips below and Check how to format your work by looking at Appendix 2.
Submit this text with your names to the teacher.
Each paragraph should answer each of these questions:
What rules should a group set for all members? (100 words)
What responsibilities should each member of a group have? (50 words)
How could a group manage their time in order to complete assignments? (50 words)
How could group members communicate with each other outside of class? (100 words)
Writing Tips:
Check that each sentence has a Subject Noun and at least one verb form.
Use modal verb forms: ‘ should’, ‘could’, ‘can’ etc. plus conditional conjunctions ‘if’, ‘when’ .
Examples: ‘The ideal group should ……./ Members of a group could…...
Begin each sentence with a capital letter and check all your punctuation (full stops, commas, etc).
If a subject is singular, the verb must be singular.
Example: There is + singular noun. There are + plural noun.
Do you know when to use the, a, an, or zero articles?
Check your linking words/phrases – therefore, however, etc….
